My phone pings whilst I'm in the kitchen with my mom and brother. Topper grabs my phone looking at it, I snatch it back off him.
"Unknown number." He tells me before I can look for myself.
Unknown number:
HiMe:
Who's this?I text the unknown number back having no idea who it could be.
Unknown number:
Luke, from country club:)Before I realise what he's doing Topper is looking over my shoulder. "Oh it's Luke." He huffs thinking it would be someone more interesting.
Suddenly Mom snaps her eyes up from my phone to look at me. "Luke? Who's Luke?" She begins her endless interrogation.
"Just a guy, mom." I try and brush off her questions hoping she won't expect detail.
"Why's he messaging you?"
"We met last night at the pool party, he wants to take me on a date." I shrug nonchalantly.
"And you say you hate going to the country club." She scoffs looking awfully proud of herself. She probably thinks she's the reason I have a date.
I ignore my brother and my mom going back to my phone.
Me:
Hi Luke from country club...Luke:
So how about that date tonight?Me:
Sure.As much as the thought of dating him drains me mentally, I decide to just get it out the way.
"I won't be home tonight mom, I'm going to the outdoor movie with Sarah and my mates." Topper has a mouthful of his cereal.
"Okay honey."
"Wait that's tonight?" I ask. Fuck, I just agreed to go on a date with Luke when I'm meant to be going to the outdoor movie with my friends. Oh shit kie. I guess I won't be going with my friends. I just won't bother going at all.
"Yeah you going?" Topper looks at me chomping away at his cereal.
"Well I argued with Kie last night so probably not." I shrug acting like I don't care when in fact I've been looking forward to the outdoor movie with my friends for so long.
"Oh well I'll see later then." He walks out the kitchen leaving just me and mom.
"Why are you and kie arguing?"
"She was accusing me of dating Rafe."
"Why is that bad?"
"Because the pogues and kooks don't like each other, remember." I raise my voice at her annoyed that she has forgot something so political in this town.
"Sounds like she's jealous. Are you sure she doesn't like Rafe." Mom comes out with making me think about it. The fact that she constantly asks about him, the fact she is constantly trying to argue with me about him. The fact when I bumped into Rafe last night he looked panicked when I mentioned her name.
"She claims she doesn't." I shrug it off pushing it to the back of my mind. Rafe and Kie are the least of my worries I need to decide what to wear for my date. "Anyways I'm gonna go over to Sarah's, I need girl talk."
"You can have girl talk with me, sweetie."
I scrunch my nose up with an awkward smile. "No thanks, mom."
I head over to the Cameron's household. Rafe's car is in the driveway. Rose and Ward's cars are no where to be seen.
I walk through the large oak doors, closing it behind me. I walk into the kitchen and stop when Rafe is looking back at me. Here we go.
I hop onto a stool whilst he stands typing away on his phone. "Feeling sober this morning Rafe?" I ask him cheerily my tone laced with sarcasm.
"What do you want Vanessa?" He sighs with irritation at the sound of my voice, not even looking up from his phone.
"I'm just here to see Sarah, I need her to help me choose an outfit for my date tonight." The words roll of my tongue casually.
His head snaps up to look at me. "You not coming to the outdoor movie?"
"Nah."
"Why not?"
"Me and Kie had an argument so I don't want to make it awkward for my friends and she'll probably just cause a scene if they end up drinking." I say like it's no big deal, like I don't care. But I do care.
"Oh."
Sarah suddenly appears in the kitchen. "Hey V, what you doing here?"
"I come to see you. I was hoping you'd help me choose an outfit for this stupid date I have to go on tonight."
Her brows furrow. "What? You're not coming to the outdoor movie?" She whines.
"No, I've fell out with Kie so no one to go with."
"Come with us!" She yells with excitement as her face lights up.
"I'm not third wheeling you and my brother all night." I scrunch my nose up at the thought of them two being all over each other for the entire night.
"Don't be daft! Rafe will be there too, won't you Rafe?" We both glance over at her brother who is still engrossed in his phone.
"Yeah." He responds bluntly.
"It will be like you two are dating, double date!" She squeals clapping her hands together joyfully.
"No!"
"No!"
Me and Rafe both yell in unison to protest her absurd idea.
She bursts out laughing. "I'm kidding! Jeez! Kelce and others will be there." She grins before grabbing my hand and pulling me to follow her. "Come on V, let's go pick our outfits for tonight."
I'm following after her before taking a final glance back at Rafe who is already watching me walk out the kitchen. Our eyes meet for one second before he disappears behind a wall as I am being tugged towards the stairs.
