Where He Belongs

The August bank holiday is upon us and Saturday afternoon rolls around slowly. I have spent hours getting ready because Liam has asked me out for some dinner, as couples do, though the whole thing seems very unlike him. I jump at the opportunity. The daydreams I used to have of Liam being mine and sitting across from me at a fancy restaurant table are finally becoming a reality. This whole thing is just how I imagined it and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. It has all aligned so perfectly.

I take the time to curl my hair so it bounces around my shoulders, I remember Liam complimented it once so I made a note to do it again. I once again begin contemplating dying my hair a little lighter. I used to be platinum blonde as a kid but it's dulled over the years. With a new relationship I am keen to keep Liam's attention. Maybe becoming platinum again would do the job. Then again, I don't want to look too much like Jenifer.

I struggle to pick an outfit, everything just feels too formal, like something he's already seen at work. I am conscious that I need to keep it exciting, as Liam would be sure to leave me if he got bored. He has never settled down like this before. Excluding his ex girlfriend I am his first adult relationship and I have to prove to him that all this dating and love is worthwhile.

By the time I settle on an outfit, my room is covered in discarded clothes which I have tossed in frustration. Piles of dresses line the bedsheets and trousers are strewn all over the floor. I smile in the mirror regardless, satisfied with my choice of grey thigh high boots, a grey skirt and lace ruffled white top. The boots make my thighs appear skinnier than I am, and I've paired the whole outfit with some of the sexy lingerie I bought at the shopping centre a month ago. Just in case...

By the time I've thrown a grey handbag over my shoulder, Liam has text me (twice) that he's outside waiting for me. As I open the front door, he honks loudly and I jump, but when I glance into his car I can make out the faint smile on his lips. I swing the door open and squeeze myself inside, trying not to think about all of the girls he's had in his passenger seat. The whole car smells of Liam, that familiar freshly cut grass scent that seems to follow him everywhere.

"Inpatient are we?" I tease, leaning over the control panel to plant a kiss on his cheek.

"What can I say, I don't like to be kept waiting."

His voice makes me clench my thighs together and he notices, placing one of his hands at the hem of my skirt and squeezing. I gasp, making him smirk in response. We stay this way throughout the whole drive, only ever moving to allow Liam to change gears. There's something about Liam driving that entices me to another level. The way his hand grips the steering wheel, and the way he flicks on the indicators. I watch his muscles bulge as he turns the car around and my stomach is full of butterflies. I cannot believe this man is mine and we are going on an actual date. This whole thing seemed so impossible mere months ago when I used to watch him drive this little blue Vauxhall out of the studio car park. I had so much love with nowhere to go, now I can pour it all into him.

We pull up at the restaurant and I am surprised to see Liam has chosen a beautiful place. The redbrick exterior leads us into a warmly illuminated interior with fairy lights draped from the ceiling. It's littered with small tables and booths. Each chair has red leather padding on it, making the whole room feel like a sunset. My breath is involuntarily withdrawn from my lungs. I had no idea that Liam was capable of being romantic, let alone this thoughtful. I wonder how he even knew this place existed when it's full to the brim with couples. If Liam has never dated before then he would be out of place showing up with Gareth or on his own. We wait at the door and I take in the scene. As my eyes adjust to the low light, I notice that the red brick exterior is carried over to the inside of the restaurant. It is stunning. Liam smirks to himself a little when he notices my agape expression. He knows he's pulled this one out of the bag.
