________Alice POV_______
I lie awake in the early morning, staring at the hauntingly white ceiling. Rapid flashes of last night forced me to shut my eyes, praying for them to go away and disappear forever. But, unfortunately, that's not how this works. I will never forget the cold, lifeless stare of the man I killed.
I killed that man for what?
For Matsuo.
Shame hit me like a ten-ton anvil as soon as I stepped into the penthouse last night. I did my best to drown my sorrows. However, alcohol can't simply erase memories.
I roll out of bed, still in my bra and underwear. For a brief moment, I turned back to look at the bed and can't recall when I got into it.
After I step out of the shower, I wipe the mirror that's been fogged up by the steam. My face is beet red, and under my eyes are black from makeup mixed in with stress. Right about now, water with Tylenol sounded good for this hangover.
When I stepped out of my room, I noticed the living area was empty, and my eyes automatically traveled to the elevator. This seemed too easy. There is always someone waiting in the living room to babysit me.
With a sigh, I shook the thought of escaping away even though it was very tempting. So instead I trudge in the direction stopping right by the bottom of the stairs. Somehow I am halfway up freezing for a moment glancing down at the living area.
What am I even doing?
I'm not supposed to go up here unless Matsuo calls for me.
Matsuo?
Screw Matsuo, I don't care about his rules anymore.
I continue up the stairs walking straight into the office and glancing back at the empty chair. Tip toeing deeper inside I glance around the room, squinting in the darkness. The curtains are drawn closed, however, a sliver of sunlight slips through.
The desk is neat with two or three files and a closed laptop. Curiosity compelled me to behind take a seat at the desk.
First, I glanced down at the files not surprised to see mine, of course, he snooped around to find information about me. I opened the laptop, flinching when the screen flickered on with a headshot picture of me taking up the entire monitor.
Creepy much?
I close the damn thing, "What the hell am I gonna do?"
With my head in between my hands, I stare down at the files. One slightly sticking out underneath the first file caught my attention. I grabbed it moving the other aside and flipping it open infuriated by the sight of my resignation form. Sure enough, it is a printed copy of my resignation addressed to the precinct. I couldn't believe my eyes, the audacity never runs dry from that bastard.
The very culprit behind this clears his throat, leaning casually against the door frame across the room. The lights flicker on burning my eyes briefly as they adjust. Matsuo's brown eyes were impassive but when he speaks his annoyed.
"What did I say about my office?"
Matsuo dares to scold me after he's ruined my life!
"What's this?" I spit with venom laced in my tone, standing up and knocking the chair back with the resignation form held up in the air.
His brown, attentive eyes were pinned on me as he entered the room walking over to the desk. I strike first, throwing the piece of paper at him before swinging at his face.
Matsuo captured my hand stopping the assault. Then, I use my other hand to swing at his head again. However, he twists my other arm behind my back. Using all my strength I stomp on his foot causing him to curse and release me. Just as I spin around both of his arms shoot out pulling me against his chest. My arms were pinned to my sides, and Matsuo made it impossible to move in the tight hold.
