Alice POV

The next day, Matsuo and I went out for breakfast. It was a quaint little cafe that was a bit fancy yet homey. Didn't bother me much as long as there was piping hot coffee. I fiddle with the mug, watching the steam rise from it. Very little words were said between us since last night. It's been somewhat awkward since Matsuo swore on my life to keep his friends safe. What he had done didn't bother me. It's just the importance of my name being used that I questioned the meaning of.

Normally, when you swear on a name, it's someone you care about. For instance, people swear on their mothers, dogs, and even God. For Matsuo to swear on my name and for Kenji to even mention it has me wondering.

"How did you sleep?" He asked from across the small table.

This whole time, he's been quietly looking over papers with an untouched breakfast sandwich to the side.

"Oh," I sat up straighter in the chair. "It was decent. Nice to be in my bed again."

But it wasn't my bed. It didn't feel like my bed, and I would rather be sleeping somewhere else. It should be in my shitty apartment. However, I would be lying to myself.

"That's good you got some rest," he sipped on his tea. "Because we are going out tonight to a formal event."

I groan at the news, "Is that a good idea? Aren't you supposed to be doing something about your father?"

Matsuo shot me a flat look before peering back down at his papers.

"You don't need to worry yourself about that, I have everything lined up to ensure his downfall."

"Hard not to worry when you swore on my name," I mumbled before taking a swig of my coffee.

I heard the paper smack against the table before gazing across the table. The agitated expression he displayed caused me to laugh. That only spurred on a pointed warning with his eyes targeted at me.

"Take the stick out of your ass, I was just joking." I defend when my laughter dies down. "Well, sort of joking."

Matsuo clicked his teeth as I continued to run my mouth. It was hard not to when I got this type of reaction out of him. I found it fun to press his buttons even if he wasn't the slightest amused. On the other hand, I was trying to keep myself together when I saw Matsuo's face.

"At least you're laughing." He said with little emotion, except for a bit of sarcasm.

"Come on, the way you looked at me was funny. Have you met yourself? You're always serious, so sorry if I find it funny when I catch you off guard."

He hated it, I could tell, but he cracked a subtle, almost invisible smile. I think we have grown on each other, probably best described as parasites, but we've begun to tolerate each other.

What a long and tricky road it has been. Now that I think about all that has happened, I'm curious if my father even noticed I was gone. It's been months since my leave, which was only supposed to be short. I doubt my father or even Blake would think that I've ended up kidnapped.

Kidnapped.

I scoff at the thought. Hardly feels like I've been kidnapped. At first, maybe, but a lot has changed, I've changed to a certain degree.

"What's wrong?" Matsuo asked with his papers set down once again.

"Just thinking, it's nothing important." I brushed it off, yet something ate away at me.

Matsuo gauged me with precision, "Something is wrong by the look on your face."

I stilled when he read me so easily. We locked eyes for a moment before I broke away first.
