Bleakness

"We'll find the Red Room, and Dreykov." Costia said, trying to calm Natasha down. She was just pacing around in the kitchen, not glancing at her wife once. "How?" Natasha snapped, finally stopping with the pacing. "How should we do that? This was our last option."

"Natasha, we will find a way. We always have." Costia said softly, trying to calm her wife down. It wasn't working.

"I need to do this, Cos. I owe it to Yelena and you," Natasha said while tears formed in her eyes. "And myself." She added.

"You don't have to do it alone." Costia reassured her while grabbing the sides of her arms, keeping her steady. "I'm right here, with you. I promised I would be, didn't I?" Costia smiled, "We'll do this, together. I promise you that." she said before she wrapped her arms around Natasha, breathing in her scent.

Natasha sighed as she laid her arms around Costia's waist. They only needed each other, nothing more. They were convinced they could do this together, as a team. Things had always worked out that way, with just the two of them.

"Where are we supposed to start?" Natasha wondered as Costia released her from her tight grip. "We don't even have Rick for resources anymore." She sighed.

"How is he?" Costia asked, she had completely forgotten about him because of all this family drama. "Ross has nothing on him, I don't think he's in danger." Natasha said.

"Alright. Good." Costia mumbled. "Then... let's just go? I'm pretty sure Melina has a car. We know she has weapons."

Natasha nodded before she walked to the food shelf with the secret armoury behind it. Melina's voice stopped her. "What are you two doing?"

"We're gonna do this ourselves." Natasha answered for the both of them.

"Don't. You won't survive." Melina said. She still stood inside the living room, it was directly connected to the kitchen.

"I wish I could believe that you cared. But you're not even the first mother that abandoned me." Natasha sighed.

"No, you weren't abandoned. You were selected by a program that assessed the genetic potential in infants."

Natasha turned around and walked closer to Melina, Costia didn't dare to move. She was selected by the very same program, if Melina was telling the truth. "I was taken?" Natasha asked, her voice sounded so small.

This was new infromation for her, she lived all her life thinking the first family she ever had didn't care for her.

"I believe a bargain was struck, your family paid off. But your mother, she never stopped looking for you. She was like you in that way. She was relentless."

"What happened to her?" Natasha asked, fearing the answer. She hoped that her mother was still alive, but she assumed otherwise.

"Dreykov had her killed." Melina said. Natasha looked down, Costia walked over to her and laid her hand on Natasha's shoulder. "Her existence threatened to uncover the Red Room. Normally, the actions of one curious civilian wouldn't warrant an execution, but, as I said, she was relentless." Melina added.

"I thought about her every day of my life. Whether or not I admitted it to myself, I did." Natasha said, a single tear rolling down her cheek.

"I've always found it best not to look into the past." Melina said.

Natasha looked at the book shelves right next to Melina, she reached for one of the books. "Then why did you save this?" She asked while opening the book. Only now Costia saw it was an album, a family album. It was filled with pictures of them, just in younger. "I remember this day. We shot Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and summer vacation all in one day. Different backdrops." Natasha said as she pointed at one of the pictures.
