A Novel Idea

There are 3 reasons to marry
In this day and age:
One for taxes,
Two for children,
Or for whom your lover prays.

But still, I have found,
Without need for the three,
What a novel idea
To be loved infinitely.

Without any terms
Written out in blank pages
To fill after signing
And withstand all the ages.

What a novel idea!
Loved without refrain?
In sickness or health
Or emotional pain.

What a novel idea!
To be doubtless and sure
That this time will be different—
It won't be like before.

Sometimes, I do envy
Those bent at their knees,
For there was a time
It was once believed...

That they loved and were loved,
So deep and returned,
That forever seemed lesser
Than what's true to the word.

And they knew without doubt,
For a moment in time,
That they were enough
To forever be bined.

But forevers begin
And they end just the same
By her second or third
Change of her own name.

And though I am prone
To write my own pages
I still pass the thought
That entraps those who cage it.

What a novel idea,
Though naive in appeal,
To be loved deep enough
For such a book to seem real.
