Sleeping on Air

I sleep on a mattress,
Filled up with air.
My real one's in storage,
Waiting for me there.

I sleep on an air mattress,
But sometimes it leaks;
And I rest in my hammock,
With its nightly sinks.

I sleep on an air mattress
I can trade for another.
It'd take only a minute,
But my energy falters.

I'd rather fall into
Her clutches nightly,
Shrouded by days
With impermanence lightly.

I sleep on a mattress
Designed just for me.
Single, alone,
Just my dog at my knee.

And when the time came,
To make timely changes,
To make room for another
With urgency plaguing,

I shipped all my things,
Packed in tight little boxes,
With hope I found home,
With hope I'd unbox them.

But my lease was up,
Dared me to move yet again.
And just as you came,
You left, as I went.

So I slept on my air mattress,
And sunk to the floor,
Wondering if I, too,
should run away once more.

But my bones said, "I'm tired."
My heart said, "No more."
It's time, once again,
to get up off the floor.

My bed called again
To unpack it, once more.

Once more.
One more time,
And you'll sleep peacefully.
Your dog at your side,
And not at your knee.

And when the time comes
For another to join you,
You'll be ready and home,
Your own home you can to run to.

And gone be the days,
Of sleeping on air.
These dreams at your back,
Nightmares behind errs.
