Chapter 14

Devin's POV
My phone vibrated and I looked around. I quickly checked my phone when my teacher wasn't looking. Emilia texted me.

Emilia: MY MOM DID IT! SHE GOT MY SCHOOL TO LET ME READ A BOOK I LIKE!

I quickly turned my phone off then went back to taking notes. During lunch, I worked on homework again. I took a break and checked on Emilia.

*Text Message with Emilia*
Devin: Hey. I'm in lunch. Are you awake?

Emilia: Mhm! I just woke up!

Devin: Did you figure out if I can smuggle food in for you?

Emilia: Oh! They said you can bring me food. I just have to take small bites and eat slowly.

Devin: What kind of cupcakes do you want? Or do you want something else?

Emilia: Oooo. Cookies and cream or chocolate chip.

Devin: Ah. Okay. Gotta go. Bell rang. Still love manatees, sloths, and wolves?

Emilia: Mhm!

We started packing our things up. We started walking to class.

"Do you guys know where, I can get some fake flowers?"

"Why would you get her fake flowers?"

"So, they'd never die."

"Ew."

I nudged Riley.

"My sister's gotten some from a crafts store. Maybe you can try there."

"Why would you tell him?"

We got to class then walked in. We sat in the back.

"Wouldn't you prefer, to get her REAL flowers?"

"Dumbfuck. I can always do that."

"Then, why aren't you gonna do it now?"

"Oh wait. She might want to smell them. I can get her fake flowers for her room."

The bell rang and our teacher walked in. My friends were bullshitting with each other. I started to tune them out. The lesson seemed familiar. I realized, it was something, Emilia was struggling with.

Huh.

I can help now.

After school ended, I picked my sister up.

"Wanna come help me pick out some things for Emi's birthday?"

Her face lit up.

"Really?! Mommy said, I can't go to the hospital. She doesn't want me to get sick."

"Ah. I understand that. How about this...you can get her things and you can give them to her when she goes home."

"Oooo! I like that!"

I started driving to a store. I found a spot then parked. I helped Marisol get out of the car. She held my hand as we crossed the street.

"What are we getting her?"

"I was thinking...a balloon, flowers, a card, a stuffed animal, oh and I promised, I'd bring her a cupcake."

We went to the flowers first. I didn't see any I liked. I got upset.

"Shit."

I texted Luna and asked if Emilia was sleeping. She told me she was.

"Ah. We have time to go do a few things. Luna told me, Lia's sleeping."

I started looking for flower shops.

"Ah. Got one. It's in the mall. There's a cupcake store in it too."

We went over to the cards and found two.
