Part Two

Emperor Alden was a fit and slender man with beautiful magenta eyes and long dark eyelashes. His tousled champagne-colored hair had wispy bangs below his eyebrows. He donned a dark red cape with fur along its neckline. It fell over his shoulders, teasing his black coat with gold embroidery.

He sat upon his imperial throne, his face cool, calm, and collected. Various princesses from different regions bowed before him, five including (Y/N). The young woman was set on the behalf of her kingdom. Her father initially didn't want her to leave, but the girl was adamant. After her confrontation with , the young woman struggled to continue living her life.

"Miss," (Y/N) overhears.

All eyes turn to the young woman, making (Y/N) step forward sheepishly. "...Yes?"

"May you introduce yourself before the emperor?" the royal advisor, an elderly fellow standing beside his imperial majesty.

"I'm sorry," (Y/N) immediately bowed, picking up the soft skirts of her dress, "Princess (Y/N) (L/N) of Bourous. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"I advise that you are not lost in thought when standing before the great emperor," the advisor narrowed his gaze.

The girl nods, muttering out, "Sorry..."

"Now, you are all sent by your families as candidates for becoming the empress of the Khunem Empire," the advisor narrated, "Emperor Theophilus and myself will be overseeing your stay and will choose the best candidate for marriage. So, good luck."

After settling into the imperial palace, the four princesses met with Emperor Theophilus to dine with him.

The dining room was grand, with a huge mahogany table that took up most of the vast space that the dimly lit room had to offer. Down the center of the table was a long red cloth embroidered with gold and silver linings that matched with the red velvet armchairs. The polished cutlery shone brightly with light. At each place stood a tall empty wing glass and beautifully folded napkins. Servants of the royal castle stood erect at each side of the dining table, waiting patiently for whatever order was to be thrown at them.

At the dining table, Emperor Theophilus sat comfortably at the end of the table as the other three princesses eagerly sat by him. (Y/N) sat at the far end of the other table, avoiding all contact with the imperial royal and the other candidates.

Another swarm of servants moved to the table, carrying metal trays with lids. One placed a roasted pig with a rich red apple placed in its mouth. It sat on a thick layer of green lettuce on a metal platter. Others put countless amounts of bread, marinated with various sorts of cheeses and spices, that were balanced in the shape of a large pyramid. Fresh fruits and vegetables were littered across the table in wooden bowls, rich in color and in flavor.

As the feast began, chatter immediately took over the comfortable silence. The four other princesses were trying their best to appeal to Emperor Theophilus, yet the most they could out of him were simply sentences or one-worded answers.

"What do you like to do for fun, your majesty?" a blonde girl beamed.

"Fencing," he answers, taking a bite of his food. The man was just as closed off as he looked.
