"Daiki?" You asked when you got home. "Daiki, we didn't eat your cake yesterday-"
You stopped talking when you saw the cake on the kitchen table. The container was open and part of it was eaten. But not like how a normal person would eat it. It wasn't just missing a piece or two, there was a fork stabbed into it and it had just been eaten randomly.
"The cake?!" Haru exclaimed as he climbed onto one of the kitchen chairs. "But?- It was so pretty?" He went ahead anyway and poked his finger into some of the untouched frosting on the side, then he stuck his finger in his mouth.
You looked over at the couch where Daiki was sitting with his back to you, and you felt a pit form in your stomach when you saw him holding a beer can in his hand.
"Daiki?" You asked as you walked over. As you walked around the couch you noticed that there were empty cans crushed and stuck in the cushions. "What are you doing?"
He didn't look away from the TV. "Watching TV"
You slowly nodded your head. "And you're- drinking?"
Daiki looked up at you and held eye contact as he took a long sip of his beer. He tilted his head back to finish the can, and then he crushed it in his hand before dropping it on the couch.
"Yes." He said as he stood up.
He went into the kitchen and picked up the fork that was in the cake. Haru was still enjoying the frosting from it, but then when he saw Daiki hovering over his shoulder he hurriedly slipped off the chair and made his way over to you.
Daiki took another random chunk of the cake before sticking the fork back into it. Then he went to the fridge and took out a beer can from the now full bottom drawer.
You didn't even know what to say.
He had been doing so good.
"Mommy" Haru said as he tugged on your pant leg.
You looked away from Daiki as he walked past you and opened his beer can. Then you picked Haru up and went back towards the front door.
"I'm going to the store" You mumbled as you left.
You started walking in a random direction.
"Mommy?" Haru asked, playing with your hair. "Are we really going to the store?"
You shook your head. "Just a walk. You can go to sleep if you want."
Haru hummed and put his head against your shoulder.
While Haru wasn't looking at you, you were wiping your tears away with the back of your sleeve.
You lost him again. And you had no idea what had even happened.
"That was good cake, mommy" Haru said suddenly, letting you know that he was awake. "I liked it"
You put your hand on his back and rubbed it. "I'll make it for you one day"
Haru nodded his head. "When I turn 4?"
"That's still not for a while, so maybe sooner" You said. "But if you want it on your birthday too then you can have it then too"
Haru hummed.
After about forty minutes of walking around aimlessly, Haru whimpered.
"What's wrong, baby?" You asked. "Do you need to go potty? We can go back home."
Haru shook his head. "There's a person behind you"
You swallowed hard. "Are you sure?"
Haru nodded. "I wanna go home"
