CHAPTER 8
ALONE WITH YOU

That night, it was decided. Instead of talking about it the coming morning, as soon as Sao'Nae entered the hut, Ronal was waiting and ready. She'd leave in just two days...Tomorrow Sao'Nae would gather her gear and just a single day after she'd be tasked with her journey, and when she returned she'd be regarded as a woman. A strong warrior Tsahìk.

Sao'Nae had ate silently that night, eyes stuck on the fire as she nibbled scarcely on a couple of Sänrr'pasuk, otherwise known as Glow-Berries.

And then, when she went to her room and laid her head, she was troubled. She'd be in a new place for three weeks, hunting by herself and gathering food for her birthday, and of course she was excited, but also nervous. She thought of Frut'zey. What if she got stuck?

Out in the open ocean alot was expected of her. She was expected to hunt and survive, not succumbing to the demon fish lurking about. Fish like the Tsawl'kxa, Mawup, and even Txur'txewm. They ruled the sea due to their respective strengths, and they were very hard to kill. Sao'Nae had reason to believe one of these creatures was the cause of Frut'zey's death...so naturally she was anxious.

Open water was terrifying for any young warrior.

While lost in her thoughts, she'd not even noticed the figure climbing in through the gap in her wall, the hole meant to act as a window and allow for cool drafts and sea breezes. When she did notice the figure, she nearly reached for her knife and threw it at him, only stopping when she saw Neteyam's piercing yellow eyes. He held his finger to his lips and smiled, gesturing with his head for her to follow him.

Sao'Nae breathed out a quiet laugh, raising her fingers and signing, "What are you doing here, Skxawng? If my father sees you---"

Neteyam rolled his eyes and continued to grin cheekily, "Just come on! Follow me." He signed back, his gesture clear and thorough. Sao'Nae debated it for a second, still sitting upright in her cot, eyes going back and forth between him and the door leading to the main area of the Marui.

"You gotta trust me, Ma'tanhì." He signed.

She shook her head, "That already sounds like a mistake." Despite having said that, Sao'Nae reached out her hand and took his within her own, letting him yank her up and lead her back out the window, rushing down the sides of the paths, his body crouched slightly so nobody else saw them together. Her mother dictated every decision in her life, for the first time, she just wanted to be able to breathe.

Sao'Nae could feel her heart racing in her chest, nervous and excited all at the same time. Where was Neteyam taking her? Why was he taking her? All these questions flew through her head but she couldn't bring herself to care, because like it or not, she trusted him.

Once they were off the beaten path and a bit further than most people would be able to hear, Neteyam looked at her and grinned, "Keep up, Sao'Nae!" He said, his hand still clasped firmly around hers.

The girl couldn't help but laugh,"Where are we going?" She asked.

Neteyam looked at her but quickly turned back in front of him, keeping a steady pace as he pulled her across the sandy beach, "Don't ask questions!" He laughed, picking her up in his arms when they came across a fallen log that had washed up from sea.

Once he got over he put her back on the ground and kept pulling. Honestly, Sao'Nae wasn't sure what was happening, but she loved every second of it. After a couple minutes Neteyam's Ikran came into view, his smile growing as he saw Sao'Nae's eyes widen. She'd only seen an Ikran once and that was when Neteyam and his family first arrived in Awa'atlu, but even then, they didn't look as big as they did up close.
