CHAPTER 33
WE RIDESao'Nae sprinted to the beach and jumped in the water as fast as her legs would let her. She had to warn Nasilive! Before it was too late. She looked through the deep sea water until she saw the fairly large Tulkun swimming happily in the waves. She got off her Ilu and swam deeper down, flailing to get his attention. When the creature did look at her, he saw her panic.
'Sao'Nae?'
The girl shook her head and quickly began signing, " Hunters are here! They are killing Tulkun, you must flee and protect your pod!" She assured, eyes wide with threatening sadness and anger.
Nasilive echoed softly, 'Okay.'
The two were quick and efficient, the large warrior fish warning his un-bonded brethren about the danger ensuing them, diving beneath the waves after giving thanks to his dearest Sao'Nae. Sao'Nae got back on her Ilu and swam back to shore, climbing onto the sandy beaches and looking around to see similar acts taking place.
Sao'Nae ran forward as she caught sight of Neytiri and Jake, for some odd reason Jake's hand on his necklace. Neytiri seemed upset as she spoke with Koka'ri, one of Ao'nung's friends, " Did you see where they went?!" She pressed, looking over as Jake tapped her arm.
" They went outside the reef---" The boy recalled only to be interrupted by Jake.
" Yeah, Lo'ak." He affirmed, brows furrowed as he kept a hand on his mate. Neytiri quickly tuned in through her own earpiece after hearing Lo'ak's name.
Sao'Nae approached quickly, " Where's my family?!" She asked, " I can't find Rotxo or Ao'nung or Tsireya or Neteyam---"
" Lo'ak, who's with you!?" He asked with concern, his mate holding tight to him.
Neytiri glanced at Sao'Nae, " One second." She assured, though her eyes held as much fear as the young girls.
Jake persisted, " You get to cover, do NOT engage! All right, you hear me? Do not engage!"
Neytiri put a hand on her shoulder, " A Demon ship has found Payakan! Your siblings, Rotxo, and my children are with him!" She informed, recalling the conversation between Jake and her son. Once again Sao'Nae found herself biting her cheek, a gnawing fear crippling her stomach...
Jake turned to stare at the girl, " Sao'Nae, we need to warn your parents!"
Sao'Nae nodded, " Right, let's go!" The girl grabbed both Neytiri and Jake's hand and began running through the village, making sharp turns on the paths, Sao'Nae even going as far as to jump from path to path in an effort to be faster.
Neteyam....fuck Neteyam was in danger and she wasn't with him!
Jake hollard as soon as he saw Tonowari sitting outside his home, " The kids are under attack!" He yelled, coming to a halting stop in front of the large Metkayina man, " The kids are under attack. They were defending a Tulkun. It's your kids too!"
Ronal shot up from her seated position and rested deeper inside their tent, Tonowari's eyes narrowing and his ears twitching.
" The demon ship?" He beckoned.
" Yes!" Jake replied, " We gotta go!"
Tonowari glanced at his daughter, " Where were you?" He asked, " I thought you were with Ao'nung?"
Sao'Nae lowered her head, " I was warning my spirit brother, Ao'nung said he'd help warn the others..." She said.
Tonowari nodded and looked to the warriors behind his daughter, " Weapons, sound the alarms!" He ordered, watching as they scattered and began grabbing spears and bows. Ronal emerged with a spear of her own, her eyes filled with an intense force Sao'Nae had only seen a number of times.
Tonowari reached for his wife's pregnant belly, " You should stay here...." He said.
Ronal looked towards her eldest daughter hesitantly, that look in her eyes hardening as she nodded, as if something was finally clicking in her head, " I ride!"
Tonowari snarled but nodded reluctantly before glancing at Sao'Nae.
" Sweet daughter, get whatever weapons you must. These demons die today!" He swore, stomping off after Ronal.
Sao'Nae nodded and entered her home, reaching for her knives and putting two on her either side of her hips, then she picked up her spear from her Inknimaya. She ran to her room and opened a shell of red paint, re-paving the markings given to her from her time in Ta'unui. When she reemerged from the tent she ran after her parents and the Sully parents...
Everyone ran to the docks and dove into the water, yelling and ululating.
Sao'Nae growled and sprinted, diving in behind them, grabbing hold of her skimwing. Once they popped from the water, barely grazing the waves, everyone released war cries, Neytiri above and thrusting her bow in the air.
Ronal glanced at her daughter and did her own call, to which Sao'Nae copied and repeated.
