(I'm pretty sure this is romance??? .... *whispers* correct me if I'm wrong lol ....)
My best synopsis so far: Cynthia's plans for her future are flip flopped when her parents force her to go to college in New York. It could have gone horribly wrong, but it goes worse when she runs into a rich snob of a man. Cue the chaos and possible future romance.
This story starts off quickly, which is great. The main conflict doesn't wander into the story too late; we get it immediately in the first chapter. Thank you :)
I love Cynthia's inner voice. It's a unique and interesting way to color her character.
The events of the story (not just the first chapter) come at fast pace, not letting us drag in unnecessary scenes.
My things:
I think that if the major reason that Cynthia is going to New York is that her parents are forcing her, it wasn't really explained to the reader why that should be a good enough reason for her to go.
A headstrong girl would dismiss her parent's control and do what she wants anyway, and there isn't given much explanation as to why she chose to obey. I'm sure the author knows the reasons, but the reader is not keyed in to those.
So I would recommend to the author: let us know those reasons. Otherwise, her parents forcing her just feels like a plot device disconnected from the story. If she obeys because she's home schooled and doesn't know how to live without her parents' guidance: give us examples (short memories or references such as: this is just like that one time when they forced me to do this or this as well, why can't I break free of that???) and it would introduce internal conflict as well. If she obeys because of some social or... ethnic expectation, then somehow communicate that to the reader.
When we don't understand, it takes just a bit out of the reality of the story.
But otherwise, I really enjoyed the first couple chapters. I hope the next chapters are just as good and better!
