Skye's POV -flashback/dream-
I sat on the floor in the middle of the room. Raven sat beside me, bruises covering her arms and face. I leaned closer to her. Our mother would arrive home soon. Sadly, So would our father. Our father was practical insane. It started about a year ago, When father lost his job. I remember the day almost perfectly.
It was a sunny day, Clear skies and laughter filled the pathway as I left the classroom with Raven. It was time to leave and our father was suppose to pick us up. Usually he was on time, But that day he was late. By about an hour. When he did come, He had a look of hatred on his face and glared at us for a couple of minutes. When Raven got the courage to ask what was wrong, She was met with a slap to the face. She didn't sob, But tears found there way to leak out of her eyes. I remember holding her hand, and wanting to hit my father right back. It was a new feeling and I didn't like it very much.
I held Raven's hand. The door slammed open and my mother rushed in carrying a bag.
"Here, quick before your father get's back." she rushed out handing us a chocolate bar. It was rare we would get such treats. I looked up and saw Raven's face had lit up. I smiled and tore off the wrapper, Throwing it to the side. I broke the bar in half and gave Raven the bigger half. She didn't complain, nor did I. I remained still on the carpet munching down the sweet heavenly bar.
"Hurry up and throw away the wrapper." I commanded to Raven. She nodded furiously and picked up the trash quickly. She stood up and began her walk to the trash can. Unfortunately it was interrupted by a slam of the door.
I turned my head to find my father furious, standing tall over Raven. Raven tensed and stumbled backward. I stood up quickly and was about to pounce and try to save Raven from the pain--but it was too late. I watched as a thump sounded and Raven fell to the floor limply. When she lifted her face up, it was bloody. A bloody nose I assume. I rushed to her, now out of my trance. Her face, once frail and pale, was now covered in a bright red.
I was terrified, but not surprised. Why didn't it surprise me? Why didn't this surprise me? Most children would be shocked at there father hitting their sister. So why wasn't I? I felt tears brim my eyes as I picked up my sister and helped her to the carpet in the center of the room. We were to sit here and let father do as he pleased. When father walked out of the room to get another beer, I got a napkin and soaked it. I slowly and carefully rubbed the dried up blood off of my sisters face. I had to be gentle yet quick. When I finished I tossed the napkin, and was happy when it hit the rim of the trash can then fell in. I sat back down beside my sister, who was now giving me a thankful smile. I returned it and then put a emotionless look on my face. I had to protect her from now on. That's what I wanted to do.
Father walked in with another bottle of beer and a bag of chips. He sat down on the sofa, his stern face staring at us. I didn't move, not wanting to cause any trouble. Suddenly my fathers voice boomed through out the house.
"CRYSTAL! GET YOUR DUMB ASS IN HERE!" Father called in a merciless voice. I winced slightly at his anger. I had no idea what mother could have done now. Mother use to tell us that no matter what happened to her, we should watch out for each other.
I squeezed my sister's hand and held my breath. I couldn't cry. I was strong. I watched as mother walked into the room, with a pained look on her face.
"Sit."father ordered pointing to a spot on the couch.
"Today is a day which we will go over rules. Alright?" He asked in a slightly calmer voice. We answered with a mumble of 'yes' which was wrong.
