Steve's POV

"Did the guy with the eye patch say you were Agent Stark?"

~~~
Stark.
The woman sitting in front of me was a Stark.
"Yep, I'm Howard's daughter." The woman said, looking at her feet.
I had not too long ago seen Howard and now I was sitting and talking with his daughter. She tucked a piece of stray hair behind her ear and looked back up at me.
"You knew him, didn't you?" She asked, looking at me with a hopeful expression. Her eyes were a beautiful e/c color.
"Yeah, of course," I said, leaning back into the couch. "He was an amazing person. He was super smart and successful, you probably know that though... He had a great sense of humor too," I continued with a small laugh.
The woman looked at me with a smile and soaked in every word I said. Her eyes sparkled with joy.  She seemed to be hearing this for the first time.
"Did you not know that?" I asked, confused.
"He, well... He passed away when I was 6. I don't remember very much." She said, looking away.
She didn't look very old, something must have happened to him. I didn't want to pry though, so I quietly apologized for her loss.
"It's okay, it was a while ago. I'm okay now." She said, looking back at me. "Anyways, I'm Y/n Stark," Y/n said, holding her hand out to me. I took it in mine and shook her hand. Even though her hands were small, she had a firm grip on mine.
"Nice to meet you Y/n, you probably already know I'm Steve," I said, laughing. Y/n smiled- and nodded her head.
At that moment, the guy with the eye patch walked in.
"Captain, I see you're getting to know one of the best agents here at Shield." He said, opening a tiny version of the refrigerators we had. He pulled out a bottle of water and sat in the seat in front of Y/n and I.
"He's biased," Y/n leaned over and whispered with a grin. I smiled back and looked back at the man.
"Let me introduce myself, I'm Nick Fury. I help run the Shield organization." Nick said, setting the bottle on the coffee table in between us.
I looked at Y/n, already lost.
"It's an organization that stops the remaining Hydra agents. We're the good guys." She oversimplified for me.
"Ohhh," I whispered back to her. She smiled and looked back at Nick. He was watching us with his eyebrows raised and an amused smile.
Nick started to drag on about things changing in the world. He was talking too fast for me to comprehend. I caught that it was 2010 and that there was no such thing as hovering cars still. Howard must have not figured that out then. Nick turned to the window and kept spouting about my new world. I looked over at Y/n and she was watching me with an amused smile.
I felt close to her already. I mean, I had lost everyone. She was probably the closest living person I had to a friend.
"Sorry," She mouthed silently, apologizing for the rant that Nick was going on. She rolled her eyes and smirked.
"It's okay," I silently mouthed back, laughing silently.
Nick turned around and saw us laughing. He sighed and raised his eyebrows at Y/n. She grimaced and looked over at me before laughing.
"Nick, I think Cap is just going to have to learn for himself," She giggled.
"You're right... Captain, I don't want to overwhelm you." Nick said, crossing his arms, "We have a fully furnished apartment in Brooklyn ready for you. If you're ready, we can let you go home and rest." Nick continued.
"I would like that a lot," I said, ready to get some good rest.
"Great, we'll have an agent come up shortly and take you. Y/n will be living in the apartment next to you if you need anything." Nick said, standing up and walking over to me. He stuck his hand out for me to shake.
"Thank you, sir," I said, grasping his hand and shaking it. Nick pressed his lips into a small smile and left the room.
Y/n quickly walked to a cabinet and swung it open. She lifted out a leather case that was in the shape of a perfect circle.
"Don't tell a soul I gave this to you. The agent picking you up won't know what it is... I thought you might feel a bit better with it." She unzipped the case to show me the familiar shield. I was quick to run my hands over it and immediately felt a sense of ease.
"Well, I guess I'll see you around, neighbor!" Y/n said, handing the shield over and reaching out to shake my hand. I quickly grabbed her hand and smiled thankfully. "It was great to meet you, Captain," She said, with a charming smile.
"Please, just call me Steve," I said, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Okay," She said with a soft smile, "See you around Steve."
I watched her leave and looked around.
Holy.
Things are going to be different.
