Beginning.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
~Lao Tzu“You can do it, don’t let your emotions get the best of you,” my mother had said on one of her unending lectures. She was the opposite of me, fierce and yet calm. It was really hard to pull her down.
She bent her head, dodging the punch I threw at her multiple times.
“I can’t,” I said, walking away but my mom came after me. She ran her tan fingers down my white hair. “If you must go out there, you must defend yourself” she said drawing me closer, holding my head and sinking it to her chest.
I thought it was impossible to cry than I already have but the tears came on again anyways, bursting out of me like a fierce and unexpected storm over the ocean.
“Do you really have to go?” I asked
“I have to,” she whispered, hugging me really tight, leaving the tears that clouded my vision to fall freely. She put her nose in my hair, inhaling my scent of vanilla, warm air and the woods.
“I can’t!” she said throatily before she left me. She ran away from me, She left a thirteen years old girl with no hope.
I stood in the middle of the forest watching as mom went away.

Brushing aside the feeling and the tears that streamed down my cheeks, I snapped my eyes close and yet again, I opened it.
My hair, my long white hair was left to fall freely. I naturally didn’t care much about my hair but having it down had a lot to do with hiding my emotions.Grabbing my hoodie which was by the side of the chair, I made it for the door. Wearing it, I pulled the hoodie over my head before I headed for the street which smelt of crisp air that was hard and sharp, the Serene greeness of many trees, few buildings with no one out in the street just as I liked it. Part of the reason why I chose to stay in this neighbourhood.
I waited for the train after I had reached the train station. The sight of an overgrown man who played with a small sized teddy was something I would remember if nothing peculiar happens today, the man smiled awkwardly at the teddy and his carefully thought out words which he spoke to it seemed to amaze me. I wasn’t the only one who was watching but I remained calm even if the others giggled.
‘finally’ I whispered to myself at the sight of the train. In not more than twelve hours, I arrived at where I intended to go.
“You left something miss,” a young man called out to me. My finely coated blue necklace was seated firmly on his hands. I took it from him mumbling something that felt like thank you. “And miss, where do you go?” He asked, a forced smile making an appearance on his face. He stalked me even though I could see him.
“Please stop doing that” I begged. The young man had leather boots on, a place where my eyes subconsciously went. He smelt of sweat, musk and what seemed like blood.
“If a pretty lady says so, then I will”
My eyes travelled down to the bag he was holding which I hadn’t noticed earlier.
“Where are you off to?” I asked. I knew I was being nosy but I couldn’t help it. I had to feed off my curiosity.“I’m going to a town not very far from here”
“And where do you go miss?” He asked
“It would be nice if you called me Maya… I’m heading off to town too” I didn’t like the idea of being called miss, It felt odd to my hearing.
“Would be nice to have someone to talk to on my way,”
“Are you from this area or you came to meet someone?”
