You Were Right

Your eyes were glued to your feet as moved them one after another across the path of the island. Everyone had gone back to their cottages, not sparing each other a word. You had slipped away, now making your way into Jabberwock Park with the cold of night settling on your skin.

Teruteru's execution had been brutal. Heart-breaking, even.

Though you may not have particularly liked the cook, you had never seen that kind of desperation for mercy in someone's eyes. That kind of pleading. That kind of terror.

And you had never seen someone take their final breath before.

Out of everything that's happened, that was the most horrifying.

You sat down, leaning against the statue base in the center of the park, beneath the timer, as you curled your knees to your chest. Bowing your head, you buried your face in your arms.

Two people were dead, leaving fifteen of your class alive. Your heart ached and you clenched your jaw, squeezing your eyes shut as you felt tears coming on their way.

"There you are," a voice called from ahead of you.

You raised your head, brushing your hair out of your face as your eyes met Fuyuhiko's own. He stood at the entrance of Jabberwock Park, his hands stuffed into his pockets as he gazed at you with an unreadable expression.

"I've been looking for you," He informed you. "Why the hell didn't you come back to the cottage?"

You shook your head, rolling your eyes as you looked away. "Go somewhere else, I don't want to see you..."

"I need to talk to you-"

"Go away-"

"You're right," He sighed. "I don't know how to act like a human being."

You froze, letting out a slow and shaky breath as you met his gaze again.

"I..." he sucked in a breath of his own. "I play games... I lie... And i- I trick people... to avoid the truth of how I feel."

"Kuzuryu-"

"Please-" he winced, squeezing his eyes shut and turning his head slightly. "... Stop calling me that bullshit..."

Your eyelids fluttered and you played with your fingers. "Fuyuhiko.... What are you doing?'

"Just... Just let me fuckin' say this, okay?"

The two of you held eye contact for a long moment before you gave him a slow nod. He breathed in deeply. "I... I- The idea of letting anyone close to me is- is terrifying," he began before gesturing to the area around him," for obvious damn reasons."

"So why are you so intent on protecting me?"

"Because I can't imagine waking up, knowing that I won't fuckin' see you again!" He exclaimed.

You couldn't muster an answer as he stepped closer to you.

It felt like your entire being was on the edge of tears, and finally, they started to brim in your eyes. "Don't let me die, Fuyuhiko..."

You struggled to stand, beginning to stumble toward him on shaky legs as tears began to fall down your cheeks. "Fuyuhiko, please don't let me die!" You sobbed, collapsing into him as he met you halfway, wrapping his arms around you as you both fell to your knees.

He tangled one hand into your hair as you buried his face into his chest. "I won't," He breathed, closing his eyes as he pressed his lips to the top of your head. "I won't, I promise."

"I've- I've never seen someone die before," you choked, tightening your hold around his body. "Fuyuhiko, I've never seen someone die. I don't want to die, I don't want to! I can't!"

"Hey, hey," He whispered. "You're gonna be fine, okay? I'll make sure you are."

"His eyes," you started. "They- they looked so desperate. Is that gonna be me?"

Fuyuhiko shook his head, swallowing as he took a deep breath. "No, that's not gonna be you, dumbass! I'm not gonna fuckin' let it be you..."

You continued to sob into his chest, bringing your hands from his back and gripping onto this collar of his blazer. All that could be heard was your sobs and wails of fear, Fuyuhiko's breathy words of comfort chiming in.

And that was the last thing you felt as you drifted off into a tired sleep. Fuyuhiko's breath against your hair, his hold around you as your hands clenched his blazer tightly.

Before you knew it, sleep had engulfed you and Fuyuhiko's words could no longer be heard.
