Woke Up Alone

"Don't make me remember that! I wanted to forget those things!" You screamed, your hands balling into fists through your hair. You were standing in the corner of an unfamiliar classroom, a tall girl around your age in front of you. She had long, high pigtails, her white and black tie hanging low and not tied correctly. She looked familiar, but you couldn't place your finger on who she was.

"You know what I'm talking about, Y/n," she laughed. "You know you want this! Those things are driving you to it! Don't be lame, come with me!"

You sobbed heavily, your body shaking with each hiccup as you sank to the floor. "Don't uncover them!"

The girl stepped closer, her boots all you could see through your crossed arms. "I'm telling you, dumbass, just join me and my lame sister and all this will go away!"

"No! Stop it!"

"Don't be lame! Do it, already! Those things will help you!"

"I don't- I don't want those terrible memories anymore!"

"They're driving you toward this, and you know it!"

"Stop this!"

"Do it!"

"Please!"

"I said, do it!"

"Stop this, please! Stop it now!"

--------------------------------------------------------------

You shot up in Fuyuhiko's bed, your eyes wide as they scanned the familiar cottage room in any attempt to hopefully regain your composure.

Your breathing was uneven and ragged, sweat making the back of your neck clammy and sticky. You ran a shaky hand through your hair, and you tried to get the girl from your dream out of your head.

Who was she?

"I'm telling you, dumbass, just join me and my lame sister and all this will go away!..."

You swallow harshly, rolling over to but an arm around Fuyuhiko. But to your utter surprise, he was gone. His side of the bed was still warm, so it was obvious he hadn't been gone for long.

You sighed heavily and pushed yourself off of the bed, stretching your aching limbs. It was still nighttime, the sky outside of the window a deep dark blue and the stars twinkling in the sky. The clock on Fuyuhiko's desk read that it was five thirty, the moonlight just barely streaming through the curtains.

You decided you were too restless to go back to sleep, and made your way outside, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. The air outside was crisp, the sky clear. It was almost eerie, and it gave you an unsettling feeling.

That dream was... god awful. The more you thought about it, the more it shook you to your core. The girl in it... She seemed so familiar, like you knew her well. Her face and name was right on the tip of your tongue, but you just couldn't bring yourself to remember.

Then, you remembered the photos and letters you had found in your cottage that day. They were unsettling to say the least... Your mind flicked back to something Monokuma had told the entire group.

"You guys don't even remember how you got to this island, am I right?" Monokuma asked. "Well that's because Monomi stole your memories!"

"Wh-what are you saying all of a sudden!?"

"But wait, there's more! She didn't just steal your boring memories, like how you got to this island. She completely took away your memories of the years you spent at Hope's Peak Academy! What a shocker!"

I shuddered, partially from the cold of the night air and the memory of his words. He wasn't kidding. The photos and letters you found had been taken in the school. They were in your old classroom, too.

So if your memory was really gone, then... You just didn't know.

The sound of the pool filter caught your attention, and you realized where your feet had taken you. You hadn't meant to walk to the pool, but it was a welcome change.

It was calm and quiet, the air warm and inviting. The sky was beginning to turn pink, and it cast an almost eerie glow on the water of the pool. You sighed and plopped yourself on the edge of the pool, slipping off your slippers and sticking your legs in.

You let the water wash over your legs, and you could feel yourself relax. You had never been a big swimmer, but the feeling of the water was relaxing.

Your mind began to wander, and the more you thought, the more questions popped into your head. You felt yourself begin to shake again, but you took a few deep breaths and tried to calm yourself.

Who was that girl in the dream?

Where was Fuyuhiko?

Was your memory really gone?

Did you know each other before the Killing Game started?

Why were you on this island?

What had happened in the years you spent at Hope's Peak?

You took another breath, trying to push down your anxiety. This whole thing was... just terrible. You had no idea where you were or why you were here. You just didn't know.

Fuyuhiko's voice snapped you out of your thoughts. "Y/n?"

You whipped around, and were relieved to see Fuyuhiko, his golden eyes glinting in the dark. He looked dishevelled and tired, his tie crooked. "I was freaking the fuck out. Why the hell did you leave the cottage?"

You smiled sheepishly and pulled your legs out of the pool, turning your full attention to him. "I couldn't sleep, and you weren't there when I woke up..." And You couldn't tell him about the dream.

Your words in the dream came back to you.

"Don't make me remember that! I wanted to forget those things! Don't uncover them! No! Stop it! I don't- I don't want those terrible memories anymore! Stop this! Please! Stop this, please! Stop it now!"

A wave of dread washed over you, and you shook your head. "What were you doing up so early?"

He looked away and shrugged. "I just... woke up and couldn't fall back asleep." He had an odd look in his eyes.

"Is something wrong?" you asked quietly, your eyes studying Fuyuhiko's behaviour closely.

"You seem...off." His eyes were red and puffy, and he seemed distracted by something else entirely. "Is everything alright? What's going on?"

After all, you were still recovering from your own strange dream, and Fuyuhiko's behaviour was worrying you.

He took a deep breath and looked at you, his golden eyes glimmering in the light."Yeah, it's nothing, don't worry," he said, but your instincts told you otherwise.

You opened your mouth to respond but he cut you off. "Go back to the cottage. Get some more sleep."
"You're not coming with me?"

Suddenly, his expression hardened. "No. I... have to do something... I'll see ya' in the morning."

He turned and stepped toward the exit of the pool area.

You were about to call out to him, but he'd gone too quickly.

He'd already disappeared into the night darkness before you could utter a word.

You watched him disappear, your heart pounding in your chest. His behaviour was strange, and you didn't like the way he'd ignored your question.
But he'd seemed determined to leave, and you weren't sure what else to do. So you set out, gabbing your shoes and leaving the pool area as well, making your way back to his cottage.
