Carmen tossed and turned, unable to catch a wink of sleep all night long. Her mind spun in a frenzy, delving into every corner of her thoughts, unearthing memories she'd fought hard to bury.

Why did Ronin's grandpa show up out of the blue? What did he mean by someone walking in another's shoes? That riddle he dropped was like a broken record, playing on repeat in her head, driving her crazy.

And that gut feeling she had, that after this seemingly calm month, another storm was brewing beneath the surface—she just couldn't shake it.

Carmen ended up ditching her attempts to find some sleep and got out of bed. She made a beeline for their average yet cozy kitchen, a space that held a plethora of cherished memories. It reminded her of the countless days and nights when her father, taking on the role of both parents, would whip up delicious meals.

The kitchen was always abuzz with activity, the heart of their home. In fact, when Carmen reached eighth grade, her father went the extra mile and installed a television right in the kitchen. This clever addition allowed him to stay in touch with the world while ensuring his beloved daughter was well-fed.

Walking into the kitchen, Carmen was greeted by darkness. Her fingers instinctively traced the wall until she found the switches, and with a quick flick, the room flooded with bright light. She wasted no time and brewed herself a strong cup of coffee before retreating back to her bedroom. Sleep had abandoned her, so she decided to make the most of the sleepless night.

The overwhelming urge to call Molly proved difficult to suppress. Carmen knew she might be disrupting her friend's slumber, but she couldn't ignore the need to clear her head. There was no one else in the world she'd rather pour out her heart to about the chaotic mess her life had become. Definitely not her father – not because he wouldn't understand or because she didn't want to burden him – but simply because she knew he would respond with wise advice and life lessons, and she wasn't in the mood for either at the moment.

No, what she needed right now was a listening ear. Her chest burned with the worries sparked by Ronin's grandfather, and she yearned to release them in the presence of her trusted best friend.

After pondering for a while, Carmen reached for the phone on her nightstand and dialed Molly's number, anxiously awaiting a response. The call went to voicemail, and Carmen couldn't help but think, "What am I even doing?"

Shaking her head, she placed the phone back on the nightstand and opted to pick up her cup of coffee instead. Maybe a caffeine boost was all she needed for now. Maybe it would help. Or maybe it would make things even worse. Let the time be the judge.

Another twenty minutes dragged by, with Carmen doing nothing but staring blankly at the wall. Suddenly, her phone began to ring, jolting her out of her trance. She didn't need to glance at the screen to know that Molly was calling her back.

Without hesitation, Carmen swiftly answered the call before her father had a chance to come rushing in, concerned that she might be experiencing another nightmare.
