The next morning, Jasper and Molly arrived early morning at the Logan's old mansion. Behind them, Ronin and Carmen got out of their car too.
Alice and Ryan squealed seeing each other and before anyone could stop them, they took off inside, ignoring the calls of everything behind them.
"God, these kids!" Molly gushed, shaking her head. "They don't know how to take a pause, do they?"
Carmen chuckled, giving Molly a side hug. "Of course, they don't. Did you forget already? You were just as hyperactive if not less. Did you tell Jasper about that one time when you got lost in the next neighbourhood?"
The mention of the incident caused Molly's cheeks to warm and turn pink. She shoved Carmen away. "No? And he doesn't need to know."
"What's not to know?" Appeared Jasper from behind, locking the car and staring at them with strange curiosity, assured that he just missed on something worth knowing.
Molly groaned. "Nothing," she glared at Carmen, silently warning her to not say another word or else she would regret it.
But Carmen, being the little devil that she was, smirked at her best friend.
Ronin slipped an arm around Carmen's waist and kissed the top of her head. "Give her a break, babe."
"Yeah," Jasper wrapped an arm around Molly's shoulders, kissing her temple. "And we should probably get going." He tipped his chin towards the big mansion. "If Ronin's mom came to know we are just wasting our time outside, she's gonna go crazy."
Molly shook her head, adjusting the strap of her purse on her shoulder. "You're right, let's go."
The four friends walked inside the mansion and the familiar scent of baked cookies greeted them along with the faint smell of fresh-cut flowers. The moment they reached the living room, they were instantly greeted by Ronin's dad. A big smile on his handsome face.
"Thank Goodness, you guys are here. I was just about to call you," he put his arms around Ronin's shoulders and gave him a side hug before pulling away. "Your mom's been running around like a headless chicken since morning."
Ronin sighed, shoving his hands into his pocket. "She does that every time she invites us for a meal. I don't know why she takes so much stress. It's not good for her. Besides, Carmen always tells her that we are not the guests in this house but she never listens."
"It's her nature," Eddie said with a pleased smile, his gaze gentle. "She loves taking care of you kids. You know that. She doesn't want to miss a chance to show her love for you. Especially now that you guys are married."
Carmen and Molly gave Eddie hugs, one by one, before handing their purses to the maids standing nearby.
"Let's go and see if she needs any help. Carmen, you coming?" Molly asked, pausing beside the stairs.
"Sure," Carmen turned to Ronin and pecked his cheek. "I'll be right back."
"Okay," he bent down a little and brushed his lips against hers. "Come find me in the study room when you're done."
"Will do," Carmen grinned before turning to face Jasper. "Will you please look after the kids? Although Nora is taking care of them, I have a feeling they will escape from her and wreak havoc in here."
Jasper looked more than happy to oblige to her request. "Not a problem, boss."
When Carmen and Molly reached the kitchen, the sight that greeted them almost made their jaws drop on the floor.
"Oh my god! What's going on here?"
There were ingredients scattered all over the counter, dishes of all shapes and sizes on the island, and a few staff members were busy stirring or cutting and peeling something.
In the midst of all this chaos stood Jane Logan, with her hair tied back in a bun and a clean apron tied around her waist. A hand on her hip, she was pointing at a staff member with a wooden spoon in her hand while her other hand was gesturing wildly in the air.
"You can't make ginger cookies with ginger powder! Are you crazy?!" She exclaimed, her face flushed red with anger. "Where is your sense of taste? Did it go down the drain or what? Come on people! I am counting on you! I need to have the best ginger cookies ready before lunch. Get your act together, will you?!"
"Dear God," Molly whispered, crossing herself as if the scene she was witnessing was straight from hell. "She's in one of those moods."
"I can see that," Carmen whispered back.
Jane saw them then, and while Carmen and Molly thought they were going to get scolded for being late, Jane surprised them by flashing them a smile instead.
"Oh good, you're here! Carmen, just the person I was looking for." She pointed at her with her spoon. "Sweetheart, I have one very important task for you and I expect you to do that very seriously."
Carmen raised her brows, not sure where this conversation was heading. "Um...sure. What is it?"
Jane signalled one of the maids standing behind her and the same maid moved around the kitchen. She grabbed a chair from somewhere outside and placed it in the safest corner of the kitchen.
"Yes, right there," Jane said, before facing Carmen once again. "I want you to sit there and not move an inch. Not so hard now, is it?"
Carmen frowned, more confused than ever. "But..."
But before she could finish the sentence, Molly broke into giggles beside her.
"You heard her," She said between her laughter. "Didn't you get it? That's her way of saying that you're pregnant and that she doesn't want you to exhaust yourself."
Carmen rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile on her face when she looked at Jane. "You know you can just say that directly, right?"
Jane waved her hand in the air dismissively. "Less talking, more working," she turned to the maid who had been waiting for orders, "Take her there and don't let her leave until I say so."
The maid bowed and led Carmen to the chair, making her sit down. But just when the maid was about to move away, Jane said, "And stay there with her. Don't let her out of your sight."
Carmen felt as if she was being treated like a child. No, wait. Alice and Ryan weren't this badly treated. But before she could complain, Molly stepped forward with a smug smile on her face.
"Alright then, what would you like me to do?"
Jane wasn't surprised or at least pretended not to be and just simply pointed at the oven. "Put those cookies in the oven. Carefully, or they'll burn."
Carmen was really starting to feel a little out of place when Jane turned her attention to the staff once again.
"Well? What are you all standing here for? Are you waiting for Christmas to come or what? Now go back to work before I fire you!"
Carmen snickered. She waited for a moment before striking up a conversation. "Where's Willow?"
Jane spoke without turning. "In her room. Packing."
Of course, she was. She had a flight that evening.
Carmen sighed. "Don't tell her, but I don't like the fact that she's going to stay there alone. Paris is beautiful but ever since she woke up, she's been with family. Do you think she'll be able to manage on her own?"
Jane paused whatever she was doing, before letting out a heavy sigh. "Willow...she's stronger than you think."
"I know," Carmen said, and she did know. "But still. Am I the only one growing nervous?"
Molly entered the conversation then, carefully taking a tray of cookies out of the oven and placing it on the counter.
"No, you're not," she said, smiling sadly. "I'm worried about her too. I wish she would stay here for a few more days."
"Maybe she'll change her mind," Carmen tried to sound hopeful, but she wasn't convinced either. "We'll just have to wait and see."
