The day was the same as it was every other school day; it felt like going on an automatic routine at this point. Up by 6:30, walk to school at 7:00, attend classes from 8:00 to 3:00, and then head straight to the library for an hour of studying. Despite the monotony, there was a sense of comfort in knowing exactly what to expect each day. Well... that's at least how today was supposed to go.
It started in 2nd period. The teacher started the class off by introducing a new transfer student. The transfer student's arrival brought a wave of excitement and curiosity to an otherwise predictable day. The class buzzed with whispers and sidelong glances as everyone tried to catch a glimpse of the newcomer. "Class, this is Kang Sae-byeok; she will be joining our class for the remainder of the year". Looking at the girl, I couldn't see too much of a difference from the rest of the students here... Well, maybe she was taller than most of the girls, her hair was short, and she had a small smirk playing on her lips. As the teacher continued with the introduction, I couldn't help but wonder what brought Kang Sae-byeok to our school and what kind of person she would turn out to be.
"You can take a seat next to... Y/n. Y/N, please raise your hand." The second I heard my name called out, I looked up and raised my hand to indicate where I was sitting. Kang Sae-byeok made her way towards me with a confident stride in her step. I couldn't help but feel a mix of curiosity and anticipation as she settled into the seat beside me.
As the class began, I felt a soft tap on my shoulder. Sae-byeok gave me a weird look. "I don't have a pencil; mind if I borrow one?" I quickly reached into my bag and handed her a spare pencil, offering a friendly smile. "Thank you, darling," she smirks. My eyes widen at the name she calls me, but I quickly brush it off as a playful nickname.
Eventually, the teacher set us textbook work, announcing we could talk quietly as long as our work got done. Sae-byeok seemed to instantly turn to me. "So what's a girl like you doing sitting alone in class?" she asks me, looking down at me. "I just prefer to focus on my work; it minimises stress," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "If it's stress you're struggling with... I know a few ways to relive it," she said with a mischievous grin. "Damn, this girl was bold," I think to myself, raising an eyebrow. "Wh- what!?" I stammered, caught off guard by her unexpected comment. Sae-byeok leant in closer, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she whispered, "I could show you some relaxation techniques that might help you unwind."
I move back a bit. "You don't even know me," I murmur, turning back to my work. "Do I need to? I mean, you're pretty and nice... just my type." She whispers the last part with the same smirk she's had on all morning. I decide to tune it out, trying to turn away more to hide the growing blush. "Tsk. Ignoring me now?" Sae-byeok teased, raising an eyebrow playfully. "Well, maybe I'll just have to find another way to get your attention."
After another 30 minutes, the class finally finishes. I'm quick to pick up my bag and rush out of the room, hoping to escape any further teasing from Sae-byeok. As I make my way down the hallway, I feel a strong grip around my wrist. I turn and see Sae-byeok practically towering over me, and I just stare in confusion. "You didn't even give me your number," she pouts, holding her phone out to me. "My number?" I ask, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "Why would you need my number?". "So I can get to know you, of course; mmm, and I thought you were smart," she jokes, pushing her phone towards me more.
I give in and take her phone, typing my number in before handing it back to her. "Thank you, darling. I'll be sure to message you." She winks as she turns around and starts walking down the hall. I take a deep breath and watch her walk away.
After School-
I was busy watching something on my phone as I walked back home after the library, crossing a crosswalk on a road that was always empty.I hear a loud honk from next to me and see a familiar face in the car. It's her, the girl from earlier. She rolls down the window and smiles, motioning for me to come closer. "Come on in; I'll drive you home." She smiles at me. One hand resting on her steering wheel, and the other hanging out her window. "I'm ok, I'll walk." I politely decline her offer, insisting that I enjoy the walk home. She nods understandingly and drives away. Or I thought she drove away.
I hear someone walk up behind me and turn to see Sae-byeok approaching me, her hands shoved in her pockets. "Should we keep walking?" She asks, her voice filled with curiosity. She looked at me with an innocent look, but I knew she was trying to do something.
I keep walking, thinking of what to say to her. "You only met me today... Why are you so obsessed with getting to know me?" Sae-byeok shrugs, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "Maybe I just have a knack for spotting beautiful people," she replies, her eyes twinkling with intrigue. I raised an eyebrow, slightly taken aback by her boldness. "Well, I appreciate the compliment, but I'm not sure if that's a good enough reason to be so persistent," I respond, trying to hide my growing curiosity about her intentions. Sae-byeok chuckles softly, her playful demeanour becoming even more evident. "Is it wrong for me to want to make friends at my new school?" she teases.
Although Sae-byeok would never admit it openly, she wasn't just teasing the girl; the moment she saw her, she knew she was special. There was something about her aura that drew Sae-byeok in, and she couldn't help but feel a strong connection. As much as she tried to play it off as playful teasing, deep down, Sae-byeok hoped that this encounter would lead to something more meaningful than just friendship.
