CHAPTER XIX

"Evening ma'am, we're Officer's Pierce and Bradley. We're here responding to an emergency call put out from this address. Is everything alright?" An authoritative male voice asked as his fingers tapped along the brim of his cap that occupied his hands.

Eva gulped, slightly intimidated and nodded her head when her mouth seemed too dry to speak. It obviously wasn't convincing though as the shorter of the pair's eyes softened and asked again.

"We're okay. Just a little fright from an animal but we're fine now. Sorry to bother you...!" Eva trailed off as she tried to discreetly wipe the sweat off her palm and watch as the officers' peered over her shoulder. Clutching Dylan closer against her side she tried to school her facial expression into a smile but front the pitying looks she was still white as a sheet.

"May we come inside ma'am-"

"Oh there's no need for....alright, please come in," Eva muttered altering the answer midway when it became apparent that they wouldn't leave without it. Turning to the side to let them in Dylan took the moment to escape and scamper back into the living room. Alarm fluttered to the surface once more but she was ninety-nine per cent sure that he didn't want to harm Dylan plus she didn't even know if he had stuck around. Calling after him nonetheless and receiving nothing in return, she tried to laugh it off but it came out strange even to her ears. Closing the door behind them, she noted with dread the rumours already spreading from the police car on the driveway. The flashing lights had only just been shut off and she could see curtains twitching across the way. The pair stood with their caps in their hands, back straight and alert. Following in Dylan's direction she urged them to follow. Turning the corner, her heart leapt into her throat at the sight that greeted them. Nate hadn't moved a muscle but was listening so intently as Dylan was talking through his collection of plastic dinosaurs as he sat on Nate's leg.

"Evening Officer's, how can we help you?" Nate asked - a calm veneer masking the tumultuous emotions bubbling inside him. Three pairs of eyes assessed him and he stopped himself from instinctively squaring his shoulders. He didn't want any of them to find him a threat. Ignoring the fleeting heated gaze of the closest officer, he hoped the corresponding frown from Eva was out of jealousy. But that might have just been wishful thinking.

"An animal you say?" The taller one whose label denoted as Bradley asked Eva.

Eva shuffled awkwardly, toes pulling at her socketed feet, as she avoided gazing at the half naked man that she had been pressed against just moments before.

"Yeah, I thought I saw wolves but um...I didn't. My mistake. I'm really sorry for wasting your time.." She trailed off and crossed her arms across her chest.

The action pushed her breasts higher and distracted Nate sufficiently to miss the doubtful look that the police exchanged between themselves.

"Wolves ma'am?"

"Yeah um silly me, must have heard it from the telly and got confused where I heard it from..." Eva muttered in a quiet voice, embarrassed at how idiotic that made her sound.

They continued to ask questions to his increasingly uncomfortable mate and it was hard not to interrupt and stop the inquisition. Distracted from Dylan he was pulled out from following along by Dylan's voice.

"Dada, you're not paying attennnion," Dylan said eyebrows scrunched up adorably as he let out his frustration and struggled over the word. Smiling down at him, Nate tickled his sides, loving the screech of laughter as he wriggled off his knee. "Stop dada, stop!" Dylan screeched whilst giggling. His fingers finally stilled as he looked up and found they'd garneded the room's attention.
