It was quite a relief that everyone got a chance to relax when New Year's Eve arrived after the hectic classes. It came as a shock when they were allowed to return home to spend the day with their families, especially for Maki. She didn't have a home to go back to. She'd officially left the youth centre and most her friends outside of UA were with their families. She planned on staying at UA on her own until Midoriya asked her to come and spend New Year's Eve with him and his mum.
She was out of options so she accepted his very generous invitation.
They were both escorted by Cementoss until they were close enough to continue on their own. Maki took a moment to survey the building where her emotional, nerdy and optimistic classmate lived once they arrived. It was a set of ordinary five story Danchi apartment blocks, each with a number on it. Midoriya led her to the building with the number 2 on it and after climbing several flights of stairs, Midoriya suddenly jolted as if he'd received an electric shock. The panicked grimace on his face made Maki genuinely wonder if he actually had.
"What is it?" She finally asked.
"I forgot to tell my mum that you were coming!" He squeaked, cowering as the girl glared daggers at him. He quietly let out a sigh of relief when she looked away from him to let out an annoyed huff.
"Never mind," Maki grumbled, "you'll just have to tell her when we arrive." She impatiently waited for Midoriya to pitch himself up off the floor before he led her along a hallway towards the door with his family name beside it. Watching him rap his fist a few times against the door, she soon a heard footsteps, becoming louder as they got closer. The door swung open to reveal a plump woman, probably in her early forties, with green hair and green eyes like her son, albeit a slightly darker shade. She wore very ordinary clothes and had a very warm presence about her."Izuku! Welcome back!" She greeted in a jovial voice, clearly elated at the sight of her son. Not yet noticing Maki who stood just out of sight at the side of the door frame, watching intently.
"Hey mum, good to see you again!" The boy replied, accepting a tight hug from the woman.
"Come on in, I'll prepare dinner!" She said once they'd pulled apart. At this, her son scratched his cheek in embarrassment, eyes glancing towards his classmate.
"Actually mum, there's something I forgot to tell you..."
"Oh, what is it dear?" She asked, her expression becoming one of concern. Midoriya took a few moments to try and form a sentence through his embarrassment.
Too long for Maki who shouted, "Just get to the point already, damn it!"
Mrs Midoriya jumped at the new, angry voice that had just come out of nowhere. She eventually peeked around the door and spotted the girl responsible for making her jump out of her skin.
"Sorry mam, this idiot here forgot to tell you he'd invited me." She bluntly apologised, irritation still audible in her tone. Mrs Midoriya, taken aback by the newcomer's frankness, looked back and forth between her and her son.
"Err, this is Maki Zenin. I've told you about her before, she's in the same class as me..." He explained after recovering from the girl's tongue lashing. A look or recognition quickly appeared on Mrs Midoriya's face at the mention of the girl's name.
"Oh yes! I remember you telling me about her."
Midoriya relaxed significantly more after his mothers words, his next sentence coming out more easily. "I invited her to spend New Year's Eve with us since she doesn't have a home to come back to after she moved into the dorms."
A sympathetic look appeared on the woman's face as she turned back to Maki. "Come in dear, it'll be a bit last minute but I'll make extra for you." She said, bowing in greeting. Maki bowed just to be polite before entering the apartment.Glancing around, Maki took in her new surroundings. It was a very ordinary apartment with some sofa's, a table and chairs in the living/dining area and a large cabinet where plates, bowls and cups were stored. She remembered passing the bedroom that used to belong to Midoriya before the dorms were put in place; it was pretty much empty but Maki could make an educated guess at its appearance when it was fully furnished, judging by his current room back at Heights Alliance.
"Get yourself comfortable while I prepare dinner." Mrs Midoriya said, ushering the two teens to the living area.
"What are you making?" Maki asked.
"Katsudon." She replied, adding it was her son's favourite. Maki nodded, secretly glad that it wasn't vegetarian food she was making. She decided to make herself busy by checking over her weapons since she always carried the bag with her. However, Mrs Midoriya seemed to have other ideas and was eager to get to know her new guest.
"What is your favourite food?" She asked.
"Junk food." Replied her tight-lipped guest.
"Okay, guess you can't have any of that for dinner, I suppose. Do you have any hobbies?"
"Crushing empty cans... I don't really do that much outside of training."
"I see. I don't do that much either."
Maki had managed to fully inspect one of her Quirk Tools during the uneventful exchange. She moved onto the next on and finished her check over just as quickly.
"You really are knowledgeable about a lot different types of weapons, Maki." Midoriya commented.
"Of course I am, how else do you think I learned how to fight?!" She asked, the answer the most obvious thing in the world to her.
"Sorry."
Midoriya flashed an awkward smile and continued to watch the girl opposite him. Maki had already gone through three Quirk Tools by the time his mum had properly started making dinner.
"How often do you train?" Mrs Midoriya asked, re-entering the conversation.
"Pretty much every day."
"How long have you been practicing combat?"
"Since I was seven." Maki said after a brief pause.
