"Oh, my article! It completely slipped my mind," exclaimed Chie once they reached the double doors of the main entrance, "I'll have to write that first."
Maki groaned.
"I'll come with you," she said. "Since your article is about something at Minami-ku, you can collect your material for it and we can visit Minori Miyoshi afterwards."
"Okay, that sounds good," said Chie.
They ran down the stairs, wanting to get this over with as soon as possible, and drove to Minami-ku. When they arrived in the small square, Maki heard it before she saw it; a large portion of the pavement was sectioned off. Builders were digging with shovels, breaking down the pavement or operating the small diggers.
"Is there no one here I could interview?" said Chie, noticing how few people there were. They had expected there to be many more; the sectioned off area was too large. They supposed most of them had gone home.
"Maybe there's more information on the construction work over here," said Chie, who made her way over to a large wooden table that was on the edge of the sectioned-off area. The only thing separating them was a gate that loosely secured with a chain and padlock, loose enough for Chie to squeeze through. Maki watched as the messy-haired journalist rummaged through the items on the table, making sure she didn't do anything that would get her into trouble. After a few minutes, Chie stopped at a piece of paper, looked it over and then snapped a photo of it on her phone.
"I found the construction plans," said Chie as she squeezed her way out the gate. "This street will be much improved after construction is complete. According to the schedule, they'll be finished soon. All that's left is to take a few photographs."
Maki followed Chie back to the square, and made sure to keep out of the way as she got out her camera and snapped a few photos on her camera."I think I have enough to go on," said Chie. By the time she'd finished it was starting to get dark as the sun began to dip behind the buildings.
"Okay, let's visit Miyoshi," said Maki.
They walked towards the apartment building, made their way up the stone steps, and pressed the doorbell to Minori Miyoshi's apartment.
"I wonder how she's holding up," Chie murmured. "She may need help, given everything she's been through."
"Okay," said Maki, "but you're doing all the talking. I'm not very good at being sympathetic."
A buzz came from the speaker, and the door clicked open. They made their way inside and went up the staircase. Halfway up, a shrill creak came from behind them, followed by a loud snap of a door shutting. Maki and Chie froze, listening. They spun around and leaned over the banister. There was no one in sight.
"Who's there? Is someone hiding in here?" said Chie in a clear voice, doing a pretty good job at hiding her nervousness.
But the lobby was as quiet as grave, and the only unexpected sound they heard was Maki sneezing loudly and suddenly.
"It was probably one of the residents on the ground floor," said Maki quietly, glancing back at Chie, who nodded slowly. They continued to ascend the stairs until they reached the first landing. Maki lead the way down the corridor until they reached the green door of Miyoshi's apartment.
"Judge Miyoshi," called Chie, announcing their presence.
Maki raised her fist to knock on the door, but froze upon noticing the door was sitting open by a small crack.
"Something's wrong," said Chie urgently; but Maki had never needed her advice less, her instincts were screaming that something was very wrong. Trying hard not to imagine what they would find, Maki pushed the door open and they went straight into the deserted living area.
"Miss Miyoshi! Are you there?" Chie shouted.
No reply came.Maki turned her head to her left, towards Minori Miyoshi's bedroom. The door was sitting ajar, golden light streaming through the gap. Maki turned and marched straight towards the door now facing her, Chie following close behind her. Just before she made her way inside, Maki stopped to unzip her weapons bag and took out her naginata pole arm, just in case she was walking into a confrontation. Loosening her muscles, Maki placed her hand on the door, her heart beating so fast it hurt.
In a flash, she shoved the door open and stepped inside, only to leap backwards upon realising what was inside.
Maki couldn't help but gasp.
"Miss Miyoshi!" Shouted Chie.
In the middle of the bedroom, the form of Minori Miyoshi was slumped in her rocking chair. Her face obscured by a mask constructed from several pieces of curling paper, a large, yellow letter 'F' was painted over where Miyoshi's face should have been. Behind her, the back of the chair was decorated with book pages, also painted with yellow 'F's, and curling wires. Sitting over her chest was an x-ray image fastened with two silver bows. The carpet underneath the chair was splashed with yellow paint which made an untidy circle surrounded by an unsettlingly familiar phrase.
