Maki pressed the up button when she arrived in front of them with a steady finger. It dinged and the metal doors slid slowly open moments later. After advancing inside, she pressed the floor number Akane's room was on and watched as the elevator's doors closed with a soft thunk. Her brain had soaked in the metaphorical gasoline, needing no more than a spark to set it ablaze with theories and hypotheses.
She had definitely caught Dr Saito by surprise when she asked him about that magazine article. It almost seemed like his parasitically selfish motives stunned him more than her.
Dr Saito had a lot to gain from Dr Aoki's demise, essentially doubling his share of the fortune that lay ahead of them. The pen mix-up between the two doctors definitely wasn't a coincidence. It seamed more like an oversight.——————————————
Maki took a deep breath to try, but failed, to calm her already aggravated nerves as she looked at the door's silver handle of Akane Kobayashi's private hospital room, before opening it up. She could only stare in surprise at what she saw before her.
"Hello Kobayashi... and Tokoyami." Her bird-headed classmate, dressed in his Hero outfit, was sat in the chair at Akane's bedside. Akane herself was propped up in a sitting position in her bed, her face held an amused expression at Maki's reaction.
"I see you've been keeping yourself busy." She commented to her classmate, eyes looking at the cast and sling on his left arm.
"High risk means high reward. Good to see you too, Maki." He replied.
Shaking her head with a smile on her lips, Maki turned her attention to the room's other occupant. "Kobayashi, I've been meaning to talk to you."
Akane's amused smile grew as she answered, "I've been trembling in anticipation the entire day. And you are?"
"Maki Zenin. I'm—"
The young woman's sunken eyes lit up with a mischievous twinkle, "Ah, y-yes, the U.A. student with no quirk." She sat up in bed - careful not to jostle her leg - and placed her hands in her lap. Maki felt her eyes searching her for something before asking in a simple tone, "Why are all the people you've faced so stupid?"
"... what do you mean by that?" Maki asked.
"Take Bakugo for instance. Showing off so much just to give you the opportunity to whack him out of bounds."
"Sounds like you know a thing or two about combat."
"No, it's just really boring here in the hospital. I have nothing to do but read and watch videos."
Maki let out a chuckle, she could definitely relate to that. It was very boring when she'd been stuck in the hospital along with Tokoyami and Hawks after their confrontation with Toji Fushiguro."Then maybe you have some thoughts on Dr Aoki's death?" She asked, get back to the business of her visit.
"There's nothing to think about. It's pretty obvious that Dr Saito killed him." Akane stated plainly.
Maki's eyebrows furrowed down, knitting together as she frowned. "What makes you think that?"
"Ryosuke was dissatisfied with the vaccine test results and wanted to scrap the project. Dr Saito wanted to keep it going. Ryosuke would have prevented him from getting the payout for the vaccine." Akane explained.
Maki watched her, clenching the strap of her bag with her fingers. "That's a pretty serious accusation. Do you have any evidence to back your claims up?"
"It's your job to find the evidence. And either way, no-one would believe a crippled little girl." She said, a touch of bitterness in her voice.
"I'm sorry."
"There's nothing to be sorry about." Akane reassured before reaching her arm out. "Pass me my crutch, I've had enough of this place."
Maki gave a strained smile as she walked over to the crutch propped up in the corner of the room. Even though she didn't show it, Maki found it gut wrenching to see someone go through a lethal disease. Despite the fact that she'd recently gone through a near-death experience, it was still hard to comprehend mortality, even more for a young girl who couldn't have much older than Maki was. She couldn't begin to imagine the chaos she was experiencing. On the other hand, she would have to take Akane's words about both the doctors with a grain of salt. There's a lot of things that can cloud people's judgment, and a deadly affliction was at the top that list.
Akane gladly took the crutch and began to shuffle herself off of the bed and onto her feet, refusing Tokoyami's offer for help before leaving the room.
"She reminds me of myself." Maki commented once she and her male classmate were alone. "She doesn't look happy relying on others."
Tokoyami looked at her thoughtfully, "I don't know. I think she liked you."
"When did you become so insightful?"
"You learn more outside of training than you think." He chuckled as Maki glared harder at him, taking a few steps back to leave the room. Turning about halfway - her glare having lightened to a small scowl - Maki said, "Evidently. It's time I headed out."
