The Joy

As the lift of the Kyushu police station cluttered upwards, Maki observed several untidy-looking corridors through the glass, with posters of various Pro Heroes tacked lopsidedly on the walls.  After a few minutes, it juddered to a stop and the doors opened.
"This is us, Maki," Hirabayashi said, and they walked out of the lift into a corridor lined with doors.  They turned a corner, walked through a pair of heavy oak doors and emerged into a cluttered open area divided into cubicles, which were buzzing with talk and laughter.  Maki looked surreptitiously at each of them as they passed.  The police officers had covered the walls of their cubicles with everything from pictures of wanted Villains and photographs of their families, to posters of their favourite Pro Heroes and newspaper articles.  Maki and Hirabayashi went through a second set of oak doors, into another passage, turned left, marched along another corridor, turned right into a dimly lit and shabby corridor, and finally reached a dead end, where a door stood on the left ajar, revealing a broom cupboard, and a door on the right bore a brass plaque reading: Detective Superintendent Susumu Hino.
Superintendent Hino's office was the same size as Maki's dormitory room back at UA.  A desk was situated in the centre of the room, and there was barely enough space to move around it because of all the overflowing filling cabinets lining the walls, on top of which were tottering piles of files.  The Superintendent herself was seated behind her cluttered desk.

Both Maki and Hirabayashi instantly began coughing and chocking on the smoke that was hanging in the air of the room, most likely caused by the two police officers that had exited the room just before they arrived.
"Chie, Maki," The superintendent greeted, looking up from her computer.
"Who were those men leaving your office?" Maki asked.
"My superiors," Superintendent Hino replied, her face contorting into a frown.  "Red tape gives me a damn headache.  Men smoking like chimneys.  Could you open the window?"
"Absolutely," Hirabayashi coughed, pulling the green blind up and heaving the window open, the smoke dissipating out into the afternoon air.
"My boss is exactly the same with his disgusting cigars", she added.  "They're just awful."
"Men or cigars?" Maki asked, smirking humorously.
"Ha! Both, I suppose," Hirabayashi laughed.
"So," Maki asked, turning to Superintendent Hino, "did your leads go anywhere?"
"Nope," the superintendent said bluntly. "Ishibashi hired a maid. Yukiko Ohara. Had an apartment key. But her alibi's tight."
"So we're back to square one..." Maki said. "No strong motives or suspects."
"Keep your sleeves rolled up — it's a tough case," Superintendent Hino said bracingly. "Gotta stay focused."
"Well, don't forget to eat," Hirabayashi said. "Ruben says "hello" — he asked me to give you his sandwich."
The messy-haired journalist offered the wrapped sandwich to the silvery-haired woman, who reluctantly accepted it.
"Ruben thinks I can't feed myself? Like I'm a child?"
"I thought it was sweet. He cares about you," said Hirabayashi.
"Well, enough about me. We should meet with Yamamoto in the forensics lab downstairs," Superintendent Hino said.
Hirabayashi flattened herself against the filing cabinets as Superintendent Hino left the office, Maki close on her heels, before following after them. They walked past the police officer cubicles; people poked their heads out and stared as they strode past. Superintendent Hino stopped beside the lift and jabbed impatiently at the 'down' button. The lift clattered into view and they hurried inside. Eventually, after a few minutes decent, the lift doors rattled open, and they sped across the main entrance and down a flight of stairs with the plaque 'forensics' above it. The walls of the staircase were bare, there were no windows and doors apart from a plain black one set at the very bottom. They reached the bottom and pushed the door open, stepping into the forensics lab.
