"Happy Thanksgiving Violet!" I greeted her as I had just arrived at her and Grandma Mary's place.
I was carrying in the stuffing and a pie so I couldn't hug her till after we got to the kitchen.
"Hiiiii," Violet replied.
We walked into the house straight to the kitchen.
"I'm so glad you made a pie. Grandma couldn't remember where her recipe book is since the move," Violet commented.
I chuckled.
"It's all good. I love baking," I told her as she put the stuffing in the oven.
I had made it early this morning but it already had cooled off.
"And my favorite stuffing. My mom even loved it remember?" Violet remarked.
I smiled at her.
"Yeah she did huh," I remarked while finally going in for that hug.
"Thanks for coming," she whispered.
"Of course," I told her.
Grandma Mary walked into the kitchen and saw us.
"My girls," she remarked.
I smiled at her as she came to join the hug.
"I am so thankful you helped her," Grandma Mary told me.
"Today would be totally different if it wasn't for you," Violet told me.
I sniffled. Today has so many more meanings. Since March, our lives changed for the better.
"Let's not get all worked up," I commented as we separated from the hug.
They both sniffled as we went to sit in the living room.
"So do you got work tomorrow?" Violet asked me.
I shook my head.
"I put in for it since I knew I'd probably be in a food coma tomorrow," I joked.
They both laughed.
"Good thinking," Violet told me.
"With the turkey and the stuffing, we all are gonna be stuffed," Grandma Violet commented.
"True true," I replied.
They had been watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. There have been so many changes to the floats since I was little.
"I miss being a kid," Violet remarked.
"Me too. Things have changed so much and it is overwhelming to comprehend," I replied.
"But we're here together," Violet remembered.
And so, by 4 o'clock, we were sitting down to eat.
We talked, prayed, and conversed all while our bellies were contently being filled up.
After we were finished, we cleaned the kitchen up and headed to eat the pie slices in the living room comfortably.
I was dreading going home. I should have packed a bag to sleep over at Violet's.
By 7:30, I was preparing to leave.
"Thanks for a wonderful Thanksgiving," I told Grandma Mary and Violet.
"Of course thank you for coming," Violet told me as she gave me another hug.
"See you later," Grandma Mary told me.
I smiled at them as I walked to my car.
I couldn't wait to get home and ready for bed and not have my clothes digging into my gut.
I arrived home and it was quiet. I sometimes hated living alone.
I got ready for bed as usual. I lay down and stared at the ceiling.
It was hard to believe the first week of December was next week. The year went by so quickly but so many things good and bad had happened in the last 12 months.
I went to sleep contently knowing I didn't have any care in the world for tomorrow.
I woke up and decided not to go anywhere. Since it was Black Friday, stores and the streets would be popping.
I had to make a plan for everything I had to do before the New Year. I had Christmas shopping to do, I had Christmas cards to write out, and so much more.
I prayed every day that the New Year would be better than the last. So much growth and strength was happening every day but I always got scared that things would get bad again.
I loved being an adult but this year really tried my strength and patience. I also had another thing running across my mind: Andy.
My heart denied how I felt but the truth in the way I felt when I saw him with that girl that night. And yet, here we are just friends. Was I supposed to be something more to him eventually with all the roadblocks coming up?
Violet was my other problem. I always worried though she stayed with Grandma Mary. What would happen if she passed suddenly? I'd be playing mother again to Violet like I always have.
I never knew what life would deal with me. I've played the game of life before and I never win. I always get stuck on a road not knowing where to go.
