"This is so cute," Violet remarked
I was hosting a small New Year's Eve party for Violet, myself, and a few acquaintances including Andy. I had the so-called "party" start at 9 so people could clear out no later then 1:00 a.m.
I had of course no alcohol out. It was all sodas, fruit punch, and non-alcoholic champagne.
Violet was of course the first to arrive.
"I hope it's okay I mean I know that people make New Year's all flashy and fabulous," I replied as I got the food plates all set up.
It was about 20 minutes before everyone else was scheduled to show up.
"It's beautifully done. You did it so carefully too with us all in mind," Violet commented.
I smiled.
"Of course I just hate the fact that Grandma Mary flew home to celebrate the New Year instead," I told her.
"It's okay we got each other," Violet remarked.
The doorbell rang and I went to answer it. I didn't think anyone would be here early.
I looked and it was Andy.
"Hello," I remarked as I opened the front door.
"Hey, how are you?" Andy greeted as he walked in.
"Good good thanks for coming," I told him as I shut the door.
"Of course, I wouldn't turn down free food," he joked.
Violet and I both laughed.
"That's such a man thing to think," Violet remarked.
"It is but I'm a man, ain't I?" Andy asked Violet.
I snickered at his reply.
"(Y/N)," Violet commented.
I turned my attention from the food I was still setting up.
"What?" I asked her.
"Nothing," Violet remarked.
Andy chuckled.
"Oh, I'm such a rude guest. I-I mean host. You are more than welcome to help yourself to anything here on this table," I told Andy.
Andy smiled.
"That's kind of you thank you. I know I came early but the drive from my house to here I wasn't sure how long it was gonna take," Andy explained.
"It's all good I just wanted the food to be fresh as it could be," I remarked as I disappeared momentarily to the kitchen one more time with the rest of the food.
Violet was following me with the rest of the drinks.
"Is there anything I could do to help?" Andy asked.
"No no just enjoy yourself and get comfortable on the couch," I told him.
I mentally thought why did I say get comfortable? Like this wasn't a sleepover.
Violet snickered at my comment to him.
I nudged her.
I finished getting the food set up and went to the kitchen to get napkins. Violet followed me.
"Your comment about him getting comfortable on the couch had me dying," Violet whispered.
"Shut up I realized it after I said it," I told her as we went back to the living room and I walked to the stereo.
"What tunes are you playing tonight?" Andy asked as he came over to the record player.
"Lots of 70s," I told him with a smile.
"Nice," Andy remarked as he flipped through the stack of albums I had pulled out.
"I also plan on putting the TV onto the mirrorball drop at 11:30 so we can watch it drop," I told him.
"That's cool," was all Andy remarked.
I glanced at my watch and it was finally time for people to start arriving. Jade my coworker from IBM was the first of people to arrive. Then a few of Violet's friends from the Betty Ford showed up too. It was a small get-together and it was really coming together.
By 10, everyone was here. Everyone was enjoying the music, the food, the drinks.
"Great party," one of Violet's friends told me as I went to refill the punch.
"Thank you so much," I replied as they disappeared back to talk to Violet.
After a while, Violet came over to me.
"Wait did you think about who we could kiss for this New Year? Or are we gonna get under that table and eat 12 grapes?" Violet asked me.
I chuckled.
"Wait what?" I asked her.
"The old wives tales about kissing someone at midnight ya know. And the grape thing. To eat 12 grapes for prosperity the entire year," Violet explained.
"Ohhhh yeah we could do the latter. I wouldn't kiss anyone here," I remarked quietly.
"Come on, you wouldn't even kiss Andy?" she asked quietly.
I shook my head.
"It's obvious we are just acquaintances, Violet," I told her as Jim came over to Violet and swooped her to the "dance floor."
And so the night crept by. It was 11:59 and we all gathered around the TV to watch the mirrorball drop.
We all counted down.
"4, 3, 2, 1," I counted.
The ball dropped and Andy turned to me and kissed me.
After a second I pulled away.
"W-what was that for?" I asked him.
"Happy New Year," Andy commented.
"Happy New Year," I mumbled to him as we kept the intense stare.
A kiss that was not on my list started this New Year off strong.
