Chapter 63

Three weeks had passed since Violet moved. She called a few days prior saying she had sent several letters already but the time it took to get to the US was a little bit longer than we both had initially thought.

So, one day after work, I came home and had 2 letters waiting from Violet. I was beyond ecstatic. Andy was back in Florida for a few days while they came in.

I got into the house and of course, went and let Sam in. When Andy went away, I took care of Sam.

I went and got comfortable and ripped into the letters right away.

The first one was 2 pages.

She had written just a little note about how things were going the first few days, how she didn't understand the Dutch language, and how grateful she was for those who spoke English at and around the school.

The next letter was about a week after the initial one. That one she talked about her classes and how weird it was with days with no sun, lots of rain and it was colder than she had anticipated. But, on the other hand, she was excited to get to wear a winter coat and enjoy a true winter like the novels always talked about.

She was also really sad and worried about not being there for my birthday. At this point, my birthday was about 5 weeks away. She was stressed anything she sent would be lost.

It was the first time in a few years that we'd be separated for our birthdays. Mine of course in March on the 15th and Violet's in June. She was hoping to come back to the states for her birthday but it depended on how the college classes go.

Sam could tell how I was feeling and came and sat by me on the couch. I had so many things I had on my mind. I had to think about how to write back to Violet since distant calling wasn't cheap.

Momentarily, I got distracted as the phone rang.

I reached for the phone. I loved now that I had a wireless phone.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hi darling did I interrupt your dinner?" Andy asked.

I sighed contently.

"No not at all honey. I was just reading the letters Violet had sent over the past few weeks. They finally arrived," I commented.

"Oh how wonderful. How is she?" he asked.

"She's doing well. She also told me she joined something similar to AA in Amsterdam so she's still attending those," I told him as I tried to reread some of the letters.

"That's great darling I'm glad she's doing well. Also, how are you? How was work?" Andy inquired.

"It's good I just feel like I'm sort of stuck so I've begun looking for some other places that are hiring. Apple is hiring for their location in Santa Clarita," I told him.

"Santa Clarita? How far is that from your house?" he asked.

"Well since I'm technically in the Pasadena suburb it's about a 40-minute drive more or less. If I get the interview, I'll let you know how long it is," I explained to Andy.

"Well, I send only the best of vibes and good things to you darling. I know that you said this New Year you wanted new things, new adventures so I pray it goes your way," he told me.

I smiled even though he couldn't see it.

"Oh speaking of vibes, did you want to let Sam hear your voice?" I asked him.

"Sure darling is he still mad I left again?" Andy asked.

"No no he's curled up against me right now so let me put the phone near his ear," I told him.

"Sounds good darling," Andy told me.

And so, I put the phone near Sam's ear. Whether he knew it was Andy or not was another story. We did this every time he went out of town. And as mad as Sam would be when Andy would get home, he'd sleep at our door.

After about a minute, I pulled the phone away.

"You are back darling?" Andy asked.

"Yes, how did you know?" I asked chuckling.

"I could tell by the way the audio sounded," he replied.

"Wow you are super good at telling things like that," I told him.

He laughed.

"Anyways so how's everything else going? I'll be home Thursday morning by the way," he told me.

"Okay, are you going to want to go to AA?" I asked him.

"We will see how tired I am. If not, I know that they have one on Fridays too so I could go with that group just for this week," he told me.

"Sounds like a plan love," I told him.

"Did you call me love?" he asked me with a smile in his voice.

"Yes I read that nickname in a book a while ago and wanted to see how it sounded," I remarked.

"That's cute it sounds sort of British to be truthfully honest," he remarked chuckling.

"Really?" I asked.

"Yeah that's like slang I say for saying that you mean a lot to that person and that makes me feel good darling," Andy told me.

I smiled as if he could see it.

"Well, you do mean a lot to me. I'm glad our paths crossed and I miss you like crazy right now," I told him.

This was the first time the closest people in my life were thousands of miles away at the same time.

"Just two full days till I'm back in your arms," he told me.

I glanced at the clock. I hated having to get off the phone but if I didn't, I would be late getting ready for bed.

"I hate to do this but I better get going if I'm gonna make it to my 4:45 a.m alarm,"
I told him.

He sighed.

"Okay darling well I'll call you tomorrow sometime. Sleep well and don't forget I love you," he told me.

"Love you too. Have a good evening. Say hi to your family for me," I told him.

"Will do darling love you," he told me.

"Bye," I remarked before putting the phone on the ringer.

At least some things were back to normal.
