"I don't think the gingerbread house is supposed to look like that," Violet remarked as we sat at the dining table at her's and Grandma Mary's.
Violet had invited me over to decorate gingerbread houses. We had put them together the night of the AA party but never got to decorating them. So, afterwork, I went to Violets.
"It must of dried wrong since the other day. I mean I usually make things straight," I told her as I tilted my head sideways.
The entire roof was half on and dried like an opened pitched roof.
"It'll be okay. We can just put the white frosting to fill in that gap," she told me.
"It's gonna be so ugly," I remarked as I gathered the stuff to pipe the top of the roof.
"It won't be if you do your best," Grandma Mary commented as she sat down at the table with us.
"I know," I chuckled as I began to work on the smaller details on the roof.
I filled the gap in and stuck a bunch of gum drops to distract from the unevenness of my house.
"Mine looks awful," Violet remarked after a few minutes.
Her pipping bag sprung a leak and the frosting went everywhere.
I turned to look at hers and it wasn't too terrible.
"It could be just snow ya know," I told her.
"Creative process honey remember what you are going to school for?" Grandma Mary remarked.
"Right," Violet replied.
I focused on my house. It wasn't the best but at least the walls were all standing.
By 5, we were pretty done with the houses.
"I think I'll leave this here to dry properly," I told Violet as I stood up to stretch my legs.
I also wanted to get home to see how Andy's packing and arranging for the trip to London was coming. He had been still having those issues.
"I'll bring it to you on Christmas Eve. Wait is that 6 days from today?" Violet remarked as she looked at the calendar.
"Y-yeah Christmas Eve is 6 days from today," I told her as I looked at my watch again.
"I know you probably want to get going," Violet remarked as I went to get my purse.
"It's after 5 I didn't think it would get late that quick," I replied as Violet followed me to the living room.
"Well usually after work when you come over, it seems like the times goes faster," Violet told me as I got ready to head out of the door.
"See you later," I told her as she hugged me.
"Be safe," she told me as I walked to my car.
And so the drive home was quiet and slow.
I got to the house by 5:30. And of course, Andy had already made dinner.
"I'm home," I called into the house.
"In the kitchen darling," Andy called back.
I smiled to myself temporarily. It faded when I realized in a short 2 weeks, he'll be gone in London.
"Hi love," I remarked as I walked into the kitchen.
"Hi darling. You're finally home," Andy commented.
"Yes me and Violet took a little extra on the gingerbread houses. Mine did not dry correctly," I told him as he stole a kiss from me.
"Oh?" he asked chuckling.
"Mine has a slanted roof but you'll see it next week when Violet brings them over on Christmas Eve," I told him.
"Okay sounds good darling," he remarked as he went to turn the stove off.
My nose was filled with the aroma of tomatoes.
"What did you make?" I asked him as he stirred the pot on the stove.
"Spaghetti," he told me as he showed the food to me.
"Oh yum," I told him as I wanted to go get into some comfy clothes.
"I hope the sauce isnt too salty because I saw that the pasta sauce had salt already after I seasoned it," he told me.
"It'll be fine love," I told him before I dissappered out of the kitchen.
To a quite evening at home.
