Invasion

"-has been active for almost an hour now since it was seen opening by a local this morning at sunrise. Authorities have established a perimeter around what we are assuming is a portal but there is so far no sign of anything coming through it."

Peter blinked awake, glanced at his radio alarm, and gave a long sigh. The male voice continued relaying news of a mysterious glowing vortex that had appeared near Long Island as he dragged himself out of bed and right back into the spandex he'd only taken off four hours ago. Apparently Spider-Man wouldn't be getting the day off that he'd planned.

Luckily, Parker luck did seem to be taking the day off. By the time Peter arrived at the scene, Wong and a couple of other sorcerers in robes were examining the portal. The Avengers weren't here - currently on a mission in another country, most likely - which was a good thing. Peter wasn't officially avoiding them but he'd managed not to run into them yet in the four years he'd been a vigilante and he planned to keep it that way. He'd also planned to only help out with neighbourly crimes, but that was hard to do when aliens kept invading the neighbourhood.

In the past few months, aliens had tried to invade New York not once, not twice, but nine times. Apparently Paris had an incident as well, but nowhere else in the world. If he'd had access to a lab, Peter would be tempted to run tests to try and find out what exactly was so attractive about New York to aliens. If he was an alien he would invade somewhere that was nicer, less obvious, and not populated by the most superheroes living in one city in the entire world, and launch his world domination from there. Probably Norway. He'd start in Norway.

Peter had met Wong and the Wizards™ on the... third? fourth? invasion when the aliens were actually extra-dimensional visitors as opposed to the usual extra-terrestrial ones. Peter hadn't had to do much either than make sure they knew what they were doing, and talk to the media and keep locals calm until the sorcerers had sealed the inter dimensional rift.

"Can I do anything?" Peter landed softly next to Wong. The sorcerer shook his head, complex runes spinning around his fingers.

"Keep the cops away. This could turn nasty if we don't close it before it stabilises."

Peter gave a nod and swung over to the authorities, media and locals who were crowding the scene, launching right into banter. He did tricks, avoided personal questions and signed autographs until there was an ear-splitting crack and final flash before the glowing vortex disappeared.

Wong dusted off his hands and shot Spider-Man a thumbs up, which Peter gladly returned. The moment Spider-Man could slip away from he crowd, Peter swung back over to Wong. "That's the third time this week," the wizard grumbled. "They're really desperate to get through."

"Do you want my help with anything?"

Wong shook his head. "I'll discuss it with the Sorcerer Supreme. Take a day off, Spider-Man."

Peter gave him a nod. "Until next time, I suppose."

Wong nodded back, and Peter was gone.

Peter did a quick patrol and was almost - almost - home when there was a loud screaming sound that made his head ring, and something huge and dark streaked out of the sky and collided with Lady Liberty with an ear-splitting crash.

Spider-Man dropped onto the closest roof. He checked his web fluid levels. He turned around and went towards the aliens. Again.

This time, Peter was the first hero on the scene. He'd managed to beat the authorities, too, so he had no idea what he was dealing with. He approached the smoking wreckage of what was presumably a spaceship with caution. Like some kind of horror movie opening, a panel of the exterior detached and slowly swung open with a hiss, greenish smoke pouring out and pooling on the ground. Peter tensed, web shooters at the ready.
