The Real Me

If you could cut me open,
Pull back my skin,
Push aside my ribs and sinews
And really see my heart,
You wouldn't love me.
If you saw me,
Truly saw me,
Beating and undisguised,
You would see the real me--
Not the one I want you to see,
Not the one people say I am,
But the real me.
You would see me burning with unbridled passion,
And you would see the scars and bleeding wounds.
I would be completely open,
Completely naked,
Completely vulnerable.
And I'm not ready for you,
No matter how much I want it.
