The bell rang. Screams and footsteps echoed all around, the excitement for summer casting it's spell onto the whole school. Brenda just sat at her desk, zoned out for a moment. Stomps rush past her and the noise blends together, all she knows is it's too much.
"BRENDA!!" A sweet voice rattles her awake, she looks up to see her best friend of thirteen years, Stacy.
"STACE!" She hops up to give her a giant bear hug. Her arms were safe. Her hug tightened as Brenda's nerves calmed down from the noise. She sighed and melted into Stacy's arms, wrapping her own around the girl's waist. Her head rested lightly on top of Stacy's head and they stayed there for a few moments, appreciating each other's warmth and security.
"So... camp again this year?" Brenda straightened her arms out, holding Stacy away to look clearly at her face. Stacy giggled lightly in response to the sudden change in energy.
"Yup!! Idontwannabang!! How fun..! Out of the girls in my school I'm not the one who's got to go there..." It was well known in Hatchetfield High that the cheer squad weren't the most... responsible. Except for Brenda and Stacy; no boyfriends, no sex rumors, no stolen kisses at parties, no crushes.
"Again? SERIOUSLY?"
"Yup... Another summer away from you in a week."
"Well... We gotta make that week count then don't we!!"
As they walked to Stacy's house together, their hands locked and swung back and forth as the two gossiped about cheer, school drama, plans, their favorite songs, and anything else imaginable. Stacy got out her key and unlocked her door, her parents worked late so they were alone for the majority of the day. Cool air hit their faces as they stepped onto the fake marble floor. As Brenda put her bags down and laid on the soft couch in the living room, Stacy walked over and laid her head onto her lap. Brenda smiled and played with her hair. Stacy was so pretty. Debatably the prettiest girl she'd ever seen! She was such a lucky friend.
"You're gorgeous, Stace!" Brenda smiled down at the girl on her lap. Stacy felt off at that. Why did her face get all hot? It felt like she was a human sun.... She averted eye contact, fearing looking at her friend's smiling face would only make her blush worse.
"THANK YOU!!" She smiled into her words, Brenda smiled back. Stacy's thoughts lingered on her hot face. What made her feel like that... Was she sick??
"...You ok??" Brenda looked down at Stacy, slight urgency lacing her voice.
"Y-Yeah? HUH?" Stacy sees the fear in Brenda's eyes and sits up quickly. "DID I DO SOMETHING?"
"NO YOU'RE REALLY RED THOUGH!!" The two girls now faced each other, eyes both wide in separate urgency.
"OH..." Oh. It was visible. "I'M SORRY!! I DON'T KNOW WHY IT DOES THAT!!" Stacy quickly laughs, she doesn't know why she's red but she doesn't ever want to worry Brenda.
"DON'T BE SORRY!!" Brenda moves closer, brushing hair off of Stacy's face and out of her sticky lipgloss. Stacy smiled at the gesture.
"I really do love you, Brenda!!" Her face scrunched up into a smile as she jumped onto her best friend for a hug. The hug was filled with emotions they couldn't name. It was nothing. They're best friends. That's how friends are.
"Let's get some food- I'm soo fucking hungry..." Brenda hopped off the couch and walked up to Stacy's kitchen, raiding the fridge. She found some apples and took two out to cut up. While she was slicing the apples into little pieces for them, Stacy came up and sat on the floor next to her. Comfortable silence accompanied the sound of chopping.
"All done!" Brenda presented the plate of perfectly cut apple to Stacy who clapped and squealed in response. She took one and ate it, nodding in approval and holding up a ten on her hands.
