When the school ring bells at the end of the period everybody leap with joy because thanksgiving holidays begun, we were giving extra two days off because of it. Mrs. Geoff did not let me come in for today as my thanksgiving treat, so I decided to go home early.Rob still visits me in the library, and Mrs. Geoff was so kind she just let us be as normal as we could be. She is the only person in school who knows about us, and we are so fortunate that she understands us, I can't imagine if she didn't.
"I'm home" I announced at my mom once I entered our house
"You're early" she commented, I mentioned to my mom that I am a library assistant in school
"Mrs. Geoff had no task for me today" I explained, I was about to go up when my mom approached me
"Eli, can you help me go to the store we need to do grocery shopping for thanksgiving" I looked at her, her shoulder hunched
"What for?" I ask, she looked at me apologetically, she hesitated first before answering me
"Well, we've not been celebrating it together for the past two years, and I wanted to do it this time" she softly said. I wanted to say no, since my father passed away I always celebrate thanksgiving at Missy's house, but now I'm with Rob I wanted to celebrate it with him, we did not talked about it yet though.
I looked at my mother and she's waiting for my reply, it's so easy to reject her suggestion but then again I think that she's really trying to fix our relationship.
"Okay" I waved my hand and went to my room, but before that I saw her smile,
I dropped my school bag at my bed and rummage through it, I grabbed my phone and called Missy"So same plan for thanksgiving?" She asked once she answered her phone
"Sorry, my mom have other plans" I answered her, she gasped
"She's really back isn't she?" She asked, I had shared to my friends about my mom and Joe being away most of the time
"Yeah, it's weird having her this long inside the house" I replied, looking myself at the mirror
"Anyways Missy got to go we are going shopping for supplies" I added
"I'll give you two a lift, I need to go somewhere I can drop you off it's along the way anyways" she said and ended the call
I brushed my hair and went to my bathroom to brush my teeth, then I headed down my mom is waiting for me already
"Missy will give us a lift" I said, she nodded and a few minutes later Missy is in our driveway, we both went to her car
"Hello Mrs. Reed" she politely greeted my mom, as she climbed at the back seat while I take the front one
"Wow Missy you changed and it suit you" she commented, Missy laughed
"You're so sweet as ever Mrs. Reed" I rolled my eyes, if you only knew I muttered to myself
"I can't believe that you all are grown up now, how's Ash?" She asked
"She's the same Ash I supposed?" Missy replied and they both laughed. I cringed on how my mother talked with Missy, but then again they knew nothing. The drive to the store was short but as we went there we passed our old bakery, I can see at the rear view mirror that my mom was staring at it, I quickly averted my gaze I don't want to cry right now.
"Thanks for the ride Missy" I told her
"Anytime Eli, goodbye Mrs. Reed" she waved and my mom waved back and we went inside the store. Once inside I grabbed a shopping cart while my mom pulled a list from her bag, I remembered how a long time ago we were in the store buying for thanksgiving as a complete family. I wonder how we will be at Thanksgiving dinner—perhaps the two of us dining in silence—like what we are doing right now buying in silence.
