"When are you going to tell me what you are up to?" Bowie's mother pouted as she sat opposite him at the breakfast table. The hall was filled with various pack members, and Bowie and Rowan had literally just sat down amongst the family. His mother was not stupid and knew something was going on. For one, she had never seen her son smile as much. Not since he was a kid. He was almost giddy with excitement. And it was driving her crazy that she had no idea what it was that made him so happy.
Bowie chuckled. "Mum, it's a surprise, and you will find out in a few days. Please don't spoil this. It's a good thing, I promise," he leaned in and kissed his mother's cheek, and she rolled her eyes.
"Fine," she huffed and then pointed to Rowan. "But this surprise better be a good one."
Rowan dropped his fork and lifted both hands in the air. "It's amazing. Werewolf's honour Rhiannon."
"Good," she turned back to the table and once again began eating her fruit as Dylan, Amber, and Maverick turned to the conversation. "I am not a patient woman."
"Oh we know," Dylan rolled her eyes. "And this one," she poked Maverick, "won't even give me any clues. You wouldn't believe the amount of things I had to offer him, and yet -"
Bowie threw a napkin at her. "I don't want to hear any of that crap, if you please. I am still eating." He made a face as a pack member brought over his latte for him. "Thank you, Hugh. So, Rowan, I was thinking about Cresent Moon's books again. You know, if they -"
"Are you not going to say good morning to me, Bowie?" Amber said, looking up at him through her eyelashes. These past few months, Amber had been working hard to try to get Bowie to notice her. She had been in love with him since she was 13 years old and fully believed that this weekend, when she turned 18, that he would realise that they were mates, and they would live happily ever after. It had always been said that when you turn 18, you feel the bond, regardless if your mate is of age yet, so she was surprised that Bowie hadn't been flirting with her, but she told herself that he was playing it cool. He had a rep to protect, after all. He was the king.
Amber didn't care about his title. She loved him for him. She spent hours asking Dylan questions about him to try to find out the music he listened to and movies he liked. She made a list in her diary of all his favourite things, and she adapted herself to like these too. She had even sneaked into his room some nights to lie beside him or to nosey through his room when he was away. She tried to listen to his vinyls, but it was some band called Eclectic Light something or other, and they sounded ancient. She would have to change his tastes for him.
Bowie, however, knew none of this and definitely didn't feel the same way. He didn't even look up at Amber as he responded. "I said hello to you all when I sat down, Amber. That is more than enough."
She gave a giggle that pierced Bowie's ears and made him grind his teeth. He really did not like Amber. She was one of those blonde, dumb, mean girls who believed that everyone should bow down to them and that guys should fall at her feet. Truth be told, Bowie didn't think she was good-looking, and he couldn't stand her whiney little voice or that baby voice she put on when she wanted something. She was dull as dishwater and as loud as a fog horn.
"Not for me," she said in what she thought was a seductive voice. "Dylan and I were just going over the party details for this weekend." She said, gesturing to the notebook Dylan had set out in front of her and the pen in her hand.
"What party?" Bowie didn't look to Amber to answer but instead turned to Rowan. "I didn't know about a party?"
Rowan pinched his nose. "The one your sister asked you about? The one that is taking place this Saturday evening in this hall. The formal party? Ballgowns and tuxedo party. Amber's 18th birthday party. She is 18 on Sunday." Hurt flashed across Amber's eyes and Rowan wanted to laugh but he knew it would be considered rude.
