-Lydia's POV-
"Where's the pitcher?" I ask looking under the cabinet.
"By the jar of berries," mom says not looking up from the tub of water where she washes the dishes. I grab the pitcher and head down to the stream, dodging rocks as I go, and scoop up some water for later. I go back into the cabin where Rosie sits the bucket of eggs on the table.
"Where is Travis?" Mom asks.
"Down by the stream," Rosie says.
"Actually I was just down there, I didn't see him," I say stunned at the truth. I run upstairs to find Ethan cleaning his shotgun with an old rag.
"Have you seen Travis?" I ask.
"Changing," he says. I nod and go back down stairs.
"He's getting dressed," I say. Mom just nods and walks outback to the fire with a skillet and the eggs. Dad walks in with a raccoon trap in hand but nothing in it. The sides were bent and chewed.
"Little rascal chewed it again, I don't know how he does it," dad says shaking his head and going out back.
"You seen my hand gun?" I ask.
"Yeah, Ethan's turn to clean them," Rosie says. I always hate when Ethan cleans them, he never cleans mine like I want. Always leaves them smudged.
I walk upstairs and grab Rosie and I's hand gun and go back downstairs to find her pouring water into a jar.
"Rosie! I haven't boiled that yet," I say.
"Oh," she says and pours it back into the pitcher. I laugh and walk out back barefoot and hear my dad rambling on about the stupid raccoon trap.
"Just don't understand how he is chewing through it," he says to mom who was cooking the last egg.
"The cage is old Augustus, it may be time to get a new one," mom says to him before calling us down to breakfast. Everyone gathers around the old oak table and bows their heads for prayer.
"Dear lord thank you for the blessing of these eggs and chickens and for the blessing of the animals for that sacrifice themselves to keep us fed. In Jesus name we pray, amen," Dad says finishing the prayer. We all say amen and dig into our eggs.
"Agenda?" Ethan asks dad.
"I need you to go into town for more shot gun shells," dad says and then looks my way . "Lydia I want you to go out into the 'squirrel playground' for tonights dinner and Rosie I want you to help your mother with sewing today. I have a raccoon trap to fix and Travis you'll help me with that," he says and looks at all of us to nod our head in agreement.
