Chapter 42

~Lydia's POV~
"So are we gonna throw the cake or eat it?" I hear dad ask from behind. We all laugh and start cleaning up the cake mess.
"Today was great," I say to everyone.
"It really was. Best birthday ever," Rosie says again.
"I love you all," I say. We all group hug before going outside.
"What are we doing out here?" I ask laughing.
"This," Robert says. He picks up a ball of snow and throws it at me.
"SNOWBALL FIGHT!" Jace screams throwing one at Rosie. We all get into a giant snowball fight and we were having fun until we hear a car door slam in the distance.
"What was that?" I ask worried.
"I don't know," dad says, "everyone keep quiet and Lydia go grab your shotgun," he whispers. I don't say a word I just run upstairs to grab my gun. I reload it and run downstairs an back outside.
"Anything happen?" I whisper.
"No not yet," Rosie says. We sit crouched over the cold snow while we wait.
"Hang on! I think I heard people over here!" we hear. The mans voice was heavy and loud.
"Get ready," dad whispers.
"What's going to happen daddy?" Travis asks worried.
"Nothing," dad says pulling him closer. I get my gun ready as we hear the footsteps crunching through the snow. We saw a man come into the clearing. His hair was black and short with an orange vest on.
"Hello?" He asks. I stand up and point my gun in his direction while the rest of the family pop up. Rosie had my throwing knife ready, Travis had his ax and Ethan had his pocket knife.
"Who are you?!" Dad yells.
"The more important question is who are you and why are you in the forest!?" He yells. Dad looks over at Rosie and she nods. She throws the knife right passed him and it lodges into the tree behind him.
"Don't play dumb with me?! NOW WHO ARE YOU?!" He screams.
"I'm a Toby! The construction worker!" He yells. Dad looks at us and pushes my gun down.
"Construction worker?" Robert asks. The man comes closer when he sees us relax.
"What construction worker?" I ask.
"We are clearing all of this out to put a restaurant," he says simply. My heart felt like it just melted and I couldn't take it. I drop my gun, run inside and fall onto my bed in tears.
