the polite laughter from the lavish dining table felt miles away now that muffled by the thick wooden doors behind y/n.
inside, y/n stood stiffly in front of her mother, her fingers absentmindedly grips the hem of her white skirt that clung to her skin, eyes trained on the patterned carpet as her mother closed the door with a quiet click—too quiet.
that kind of quiet never meant anything good because her mother noticed everything.
months have passed, yet y/n can still feel the sting of disappointment in her parents' gaze the moment they discovered her relationship with danielle. they never expected y/n to turn out to be a lesbian. let alone to be in a relationship with another businessman's daughter. she begged her mother desperately not to force them apart, but unfortunately, the marriage arrangement with huening kai had already been set in stone. and the memory of her father's cold words still haunted her vividly. he had said if only danielle were a man, none of this would be so complicated.
but then again, would the world be any kinder if they didn't have to hide?
"kang y/n," her mother began, her voice calm, yet menacing. she turned slowly, arms crossed over her chest as the smile she wore during the dinner earlier fades into a scowl. "you really can't hold it together for one night, can you?"
y/n looked up, breath shaky. "i-i didn't do anything—"
y/n's mother let out a scoff in the most taunting way that makes y/n's body shrink. "exactly, that's what you do," she stepped closer. "nothing... nothing at all" she added. "you sit there like a stranger at your own dinner, y/n. do you know how awkward it is for me and your father? for his parents? you barely spoke two words to him. you think they didn't notice?"
y/n opened her mouth to defend herself, but nothing comes out. yes, that's what she did during the dinner. what her mother said is true, after all.
with that, y/n decided to stay silent, eyes downcast as she bites her lower lips.
"you're his wife, kang y/n. that means something. or did you forget that when you slipped away to god-knows-where last weekend?"
y/n's heart dropped. "i was—"
"don't lie to me, kang y/n," her mother snapped as she stepped closer to y/n, eye twitches when she saw her daughter instinctively shrink further. "i saw the photos. you and her. that woman who ruined you. both of you laughing like some lovesick teenager. do you have any idea what you've done?"
silence.
"look at me, kang y/n" she barked.
y/n obeyed, lifting her head slowly. fear pressed against her ribcage like an invisible hand. her mother looked furious, that all-too-familiar rage blazing in her eyes. the same one that surfaced every time she did something that fell short of approval.
"you're going to destroy everything," she hissed. "do you think he's going to stay when he finds out who you really are?"
y/n's breath hitched as a respond. "i'm not trying to-"
