John B and I jogged down toward the ferry dock, shoes slapping way pavement. The sky had that hazy, pre-storm glow- humid and heavy. But by the time we got there, the guy selling tickets was already locking up.
"No, no, no, no. Oh no. Hey, excuse me, sir? Wait- wait. Are you sold out?" John B called out, breathless.
"You aren't the only ones trying to get off the island" the man said, already walking away
"God damn it. Oh shit" John B muttered, smacking the side of the ticket booth.
I looked around, scanning for another option- not that there were many. Just boats, fog, and bad luck. "Um..." I mumbled.
"Hey- follow me." John b grabbed my hand and took off toward the docks.
"Okay, yeah, sure" I said, even though I had no clue what his plan was.
"Um... Hey, so, have you ever been on a tugboat?" He asked suddenly.
"You're not serious" i said flatly.
"We gotta talk our way onto this barge" John B said, eyes bright with that reckless determination I was learning to recognize.
"Okay. Go on then, Captain charming." I said.
"I got this. These are my people. Just wait." John b said
He walked up to the captain with that easy, disarming smile of his. "Hey Cap! So question for you... Um... look me and my sister really need to get on this boat man. Can we hop on?" John b said
"Sister?" I muttered under my breath.
"No" the man said. No hesitation.
"Just... just help a brother out" John B tried again.
"No. Can't do it." The man said
John b exhaled sharply. "Thanks for nothing" he said
He walked back toward me, looking mildly offended by how badly that went.
"So..." I smirked, crossing my arms.
"Um... So... they're booked" John B said, avoiding my eyes.
"Who? Your, uh... your people?" I teased.
"What, you got a better idea?" John B shot back
"Yeah. I do" I reached over and grabbed two yellow raincoats hanging nearby.
"Here. Put it on" I said
He laughed but humored me. "Okay. This should be good" he said
"Grab a tank." I said, motioning toward the deck equipment. "Hurry." I said
We moved fast, slipping past a few workers. He led us down a narrow hall and into a storage room just before someone turned the corner. The door clicked shut.
"Shh..." he whispered as footsteps pasted.
Then the whole room jolted, and I stumbled into him.
"We're moving." I said, smiling.
"Ye-yeah" John B said, like even he couldn't believe it worked.
After a while, the air got thick- the kind of hot that sticks to your skin. I twisted my hair up, and John b peeled off his shirt.
"Oh my God. What is the hottest you've ever been?" I groaned.
"Right now" John B said immediately.
"Same. Do you... I don't know, do you wanna play a game?" I asked
"No I don't." He said flatly.
"Cool. So there's this game my sisters and I play. It's called truth or dare except there's no dare." I said
"Thats just truth, star. That's literally just truth" he said
"Whatever. Do you wanna play truth?" I asked
He sighed. "Why not" he said
"Okay. Mm. You get first question" I said
"Why did you kill Dimitri?" He said in a terrible Russian accent.
"Oh, that is too easy. Dimitri, he... he knew too much. He was compromised." I mimicked.
"Yes, you know, we all know too much eventually." He said in his fake accent, and I laughed.
"My turn" I said, leaning back against the wall. "What did you see in the painting? Something made you want to go to the archives, obviously" I said
He hesitated. "Somebody who was supposed to be dead wasn't" he said
"Like your dad?" I asked softly.
"Yeah. Okay. You know what-" he started
"Oh my gosh. I'm sorry" I cut in quickly.
"No, it's fine" said
"No, it's not. I am such an idiot. That was a really lame thing to say. I can't imagine losing my dad. My entire family would fall apart without him. Everybody thinks he's this really rich guy but he's from the cut and he's busted his ass for everything that we have." I said
"You appreciate him" John B said
"Yeah. I do. A lot." I said quietly.
He nodded, looking down at his hands. "That's how I feel about my dad. You know how whales make those deep noises? It's like a..." John B said, then proceeded to make a noise trying to mimic it.
"Yeah?" I nodded, keeping in a laugh.
"That's how...other whales hear each other across the ocean and I know this sounds really weird but, uh... I can hear him calling to me... like he needs my help. But uh I..." he said trailing off.
There was a crack in his voice- small, but it was there.
"I get it" I said softly.
"You do?" He asked
"Yeah. I understand" I said
A few minutes later, the conversation had shifted back to light. John b leaned back and eyed me. "So, tell me something I don't know about you" he said
I smirked. "You already know a lot" I said
"Yeah, but not everything" he said
"Fine....i can juggle" I said
His eyebrows shot up. "You can't" he said
"Can too" I grabbed three empty water bottles and started juggling, horribly. One immediately hit me in the shoulder.
"Wow" John b, said clapping slowly. "Truly inspiring" he said
"Shut up, that was warm up!" I said, laughing as another bottle hit the floor.
"Okay, okay, my turn. I can-" he thought for a second. "-ride a unicycle" he said
I blinked. "You cannot" I said
"Can too" he said, mimicking me.
"John b, you live in the cut. There are no unicycles in sight in outer banks" I said
"You'd be surprised what people throw away" he said
I couldn't help but laugh. "Okay, fine, maybe I'll believe it when I see it" I said
The silence after that wasn't awkward. It was easy. Comfortable. And I didn't know it then, but that was the first moment John b accepted his feelings for me- not when I looked perfect, not when I said the right thing, but when I was a mess.
