"What's this right here?" JJ asked, about to touch something on the console.
"Don't touch that. I'm trying to work out this thing." Pope said, smacking his hand away.
I laughed, leaning back against the cooler. "Man, we'd be done for without you to control the drone" I said
"Technically it's not a drone. It's an ROV" Pope said, because Pope is Pope and he loves correction.
"Shut up and take the compliment" I told him.
"Yes please. It's to early for all that science stuff" JJ grumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"Hey look once we get footage of the wreck we'll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a formal claim" John B said, calm and steady like he usually was when he'd convinced himself of something.
"See? it's bullshit why we have to do that" JJ complained.
"Well there is maritime salvage law. You can't just go to the ocean floor and scoop a bunch of stuff up" Pope said, tapping the monitor.
"I know. I know. It's just lawyers aren't cheap bro" JJ said
"As soon as they see the footage they'll work for a comp" John B said, like it was all settled.
"How do you know all of that?" Kie asked.
'Cause my dad said it like a million times" John B said. His voice got soft on the last word. I watched him. He looked like someone listening for a familiar song and hoping it would play again.
"Yeah, that's fair" Kiara said.
"This tether is like really long. In the wrong weather, it could get pushed around" Pope warned.
"Then we'll go at dead calm" John B replied.
Thunder rolled in the distance and the air smelled like salt and promise. I breathed it in, the wind cooling the hair sticking to my neck.
"So now we just gotta wait around for the right weather. And today is not that day" I said
JJ, pope, and kie went out to grab a few drinks to bring back to John B's place. I stayed on the deck, feeling the first drops of rain when I started to sing before I even realized it.
"City of stars Are you shining just for me? City of stars There's so much that I can't see Who knows? I felt it from the first embrace I shared with you"
I stopped when I saw John b staring at me like I was a lighthouse someone finally noticed. My chest did that stupid thing; I couldn't help it.
"What?" I asked
"Nothing, nothing. Your voice is just beautiful" he said
"Oh gosh stop" I laughed.
"No, no, keep singing" he said. He smiled like I was the only person in a crowded harbor.
