He drives me back to John b's, and the second I see the entire crew waiting- John b included- my chest lifts like someone finally let me breathe again.
My face lights up before I can control it. "John B!" I yell, my voice cracking with relief as I lean forward on the boat.
"Oh my God, he's out." I mumble, heart thudding like it's trying to jump out of me.
I hop from toppers boat into the Pogue so fast I almost slip, and I throw my arms around John b, hugging him tight. For a moment, the world stops spinning.
"Hi" John B says, looking at me with that soft look that always makes me melt.
"Hi!" I beam at him, still breathless. "Oh my God. I'm so glad you're okay. Hi." I say, touching his arm before glancing back at JJ, then at John b.
"Please don't tell me JJ's plan worked" I say, already bracing myself.
"Nah. No need to worry. I broke the wrong guy out of jail." JJ says. I stare at him, wide eyed, trying not to choke on air.
"Uh- they dropped all the charges" John B says
"Wait, really?" I ask
"Yeah no yeah I'm a free man. Yeah" John B smiles.
"That's amazing." My smile returns, brighter this time.
"I know. It's great but... But listen Star they're coming after Rafe" John b says
"Good. He's completely unhinged. He jumped me last night." The words scrape out of me; my hands tremble slightly at the memory.
"What?" Kie and Sarah say together.
"That's why I didn't come back" I add
"Yeah man. Rafe has lost his mind. Literally almost drowned his own sister. Thankfully I got there just in time" Topper says
"Uh, yeah he did" I said, swallowing hard.
"Uh well I guess I owe you one Topper don't I?" John B says
"It's all good. I mean somebody had to rescue your girlfriend right?" Topper asks
"Uh that's funny because she's not actually my girlfriend right?" John B says.
"Uh...Well what is she then?" Topper asks
"Tell him" John B says
"I'm-we're... unofficial, official- uh- married" I say, fumbling over the words, heat rushing to my face.
"Oh ok wow. All clear on that now. Yall clear on that" topper says
"I think it's clear you gotta go now" JJ says
"Think I'll head out. It's about that time" Topper says
"Thank you topper" I said
"Yeah of course. I'm just glad you're okay" Topper says before driving off.
