"Look we gotta beach her guys. This thing is sinking," Cleo says.

John B glances back.
"Cops will be here any minute. We've gotta fix this thing fast."

"Fix it with what?" Pope asks.

Cleo shoots JJ a look.
"Really rude boy? Look what you did." She said

"They would've hit us with a couple more if I didn't fire," JJ snaps.

"You shot at them first," Kie said.

Cleo exhales, shaking her head.
"She's done. Not coming back." She said

"Great," Kie mutters.

"How are we gonna get out of here now?" Pope asks, the panic in his voice climbing higher with every second.

John B pulls JJ aside, voices almost rising immediately, and I watched the two of them square off with a growing sense of dread in my chest.

"Can this wait? We're trying to figure out how to get out of here," Kie snaps.

"I didn't ask any of you guys to come help me all right? I didn't want any of you to come follow me!" JJ yells.

"Follow you?" John B repeats.

"Yeah follow me." He said

"You think we had any other choice JJ? What about Pope huh? He just threw away his whole life for you," John B snaps.

"Pope I don't know why you did what you did man. I didn't ask you to do that. I didn't ask you to involve yourself John B. But no it's always my fault. Always," JJ yells, the words tearing out of him raw and desperate.

"Yeah it is your fault. It is your fault. Just like Enduro was your fault JJ," John B fires back.

"Okay then go! All right I'll take the hit! I'll gladly do it too all right? Because my life is already over in the first place," JJ shouts, and something in the finality of it made my chest crack open with fear for him.

"Shut up! Everyone just shut up!" I yell, my voice cutting through everything, louder and sharper than I meant it to be.

Everyone turns.

"What the hell are we doing? JJ, can you stop rejecting help for once in your life, please? We're family. All of us. And that means we'd throw everything away for you— every single time," I said.

My chest tightens, the words costing more than I expected them to.
"So stop fighting it. Stop fighting us. And let's figure this out." I said

Silence, the whole group standing there in the aftermath of it, nobody quite sure what to say next.

Then—
"Hey!"
Shoupe.

"And there's Shoupe," John B mutters.

"What did I say?" Kie whispers.

"You guys finally did it. Beached yourselves. JJ I got you. Been racking up the charges," Shoupe said.

"I know I—" JJ started.

"And guess what? I've got a warrant this time. And you, ditching your tracking device? No bueno. I thought you were the smart one. You've dug this hole about as deep as it can get, so just put down the shovels, and come with me."

"No, you want him for murder. He didn't murder anyone," Kie said.

"Look I got a good idea of what he did and didn't do ok? We just gotta let the courts sort this out. All I know is that I got a warrant for both of 'em. And I'm tired of this goose chase so it ends here. Y'all come with me now."

My stomach drops when I see someone walking up behind him.

"Hey!"
Rafe.

"What the hell?" Shoupe mutters.

"I'm just here to save everyone's asses okay? Shoupe I gotta talk to you. You're missing a part of this picture." Rafe said

"Hey hey stay back! Stay back," Shoupe warns.

"Jesus Christ. What are you gonna do? Shoot me? Huh? You're looking for Chandler Groff yeah?" Rafe said hands raised.

Shoupe hesitates.
"Maybe."

"Groff was scamming with Hollis this entire time all right? If you ask me it was probably Groff that killed her not uh him. Did you already think that? Yeah Groff probably killed Genrette too. And that body.. that body in the dunes? You got that on Groff? Listen you can bring these lowlifes in for some vandalism, disturbing the peace bullshit, or you can get the big fish. These guys know where Groff is." He said

"Yeah? Where is he?" Shoupe asks.

"Out of your jurisdiction Shoupe," John B says.

"Way out," Kie adds.

"Try out the country," Pope said.

"We were on our way to go get him, then you showed up," John B said.

"In that?" Shoupe scoffs.

"No. That," Rafe nodded towards his boat.

We all glance at each other, the sheer audacity of Rafe's plan hanging thick in the air.

Shoupe exhales sharply.

"They know where he is. And I can get them there all right. But they can't do shit if they're all locked up." Rafe said

"And just let them go? No thanks. I'll tell you what, here's what we're gonna do. You come with me, you tell us where Groff is, and I guarantee it, we'll go easy on you. Hell your charges may disappear. Quid pro quo, you ever heard of that?" Shoupe asked.

"Just like you did when I was framed for a murder I didn't commit?" John B asks, the old bitterness still sharp and clear in his voice.

Rafe steps in.
"Think about it. Hollis dead. Genrette dead. Downtown's trashed. You're on the chopping block. Okay? I hear what people are saying about you all right? You're gonna lose your job. It's game over man. Unless you bring the killer to justice all by your lonesome. So what's it gonna be? I mean, some bullshit charges on these low-rent Pogues, who didn't do shit?"

"He's got a point," Cleo added.

"Or you solve the crime of the century. And you save your job." He said

"You know you're sounding a lot like your old man, and that's not a compliment. Now I'm getting cornered by another friggin' Cameron here?" Shoupe said, exhaustion and something close to resignation threading through his voice.

"Okay then added bonus. When we get back, and you got Groff locked up, I'll tell you what happened last summer on the runway. The real deal all right? I know you wanna know."

"You wanna know what I wanna know? I wanna know about another little runway incident from a while back. How bout that?" Shoupe asks, something pointed and knowing flashing behind his eyes.

Rafe's face almost fell, the smug confidence slipping just for a second.

"All I'm saying, is that all this would look really good for an elected official in the hot seat. You know? Get it all wrapped up in one package."

John B stepped in.
"How about this? We find Groff, call you. He's all yours."

Shoupe sighs.
"I eat shit either way. All right yeah you're welcome. Go on. Before the cavalry gets here. Get out of here. I'm glad to have you out of my hair anyway! You better find his ass, or I will hunt you down," Shoupe called after us as we walked off, the weight of his warning trailing behind us the whole way to the boat.
