I sprint down the dock with my lungs burning and my feet slipping on the wet wood and the rain already coming sideways, my heart a single frantic drum against my ribs, and through all of it I see the boat pulling away.
And him.
"John B!" My voice cracks on it, raw and desperate against the wind.
He spins around instantly. "Star! Stella!"
"JB, wait!" I run harder, my lungs screaming, my whole body throwing itself forward with everything it has left.
"Star!" He pulls the boat back, slowing it just enough.
I reach the edge and jump, my stomach lurching with the sudden emptiness of the air beneath me.
I land right against him, both of us stumbling, and I'm already laughing despite everything — or maybe because of it, the relief of solid ground and his arms around me hitting all at once.
"JB," I breathe.
"Hey." He scans my face like he's checking I'm real, his hands finding my cheeks, my shoulders, like he needs the proof of touch. "What are you doing? You weren't at the dock. I didn't think you were coming."
"You were just gonna leave without saying goodbye?" I pull him into a kiss, feeling every ounce of fear from the last hour pour itself into it.
His hands come up to my face immediately, holding on the way you held something you'd almost lost.
"Don't ever leave me again," I whisper against his mouth, and kiss him again, my whole chest aching with how close I'd come to missing this.
Sirens across the water.
John B shoves the throttle forward and we're gone.
---
"It's like the entire sheriff's department," I said, looking back at the lights, my pulse still not fully settled.
"We'll go dark. Let the tide pull us out." John B killed everything — engine, lights, all of it, and the sudden silence pressed close around us.
The power outage had already swallowed the shore, so the dark came easy.
"Shh."
Thunder cracked so deep I felt it in my sternum. I flinched, and John B pulled me in without looking, one arm around me, his attention on the water, and something in me steadied at the solid weight of his arm even as the sky rumbled again.
Below us, the marsh churned. The kind of movement that said the island was breathing wrong, restless and dark beneath us.
"We need eyes on the other side of the point," someone shouted from shore. "Go."
"We're clear," John B whispered.
"We're gonna make it," I told him, my voice trembling slightly. I tried to mean it all the way through.
