"Hey!" Pope yells.

"Pope?" I call back.

"Stella there's a ladder back here. It's our way out. Come on." He said

"Of course. Ew ew ew ew ew," I mumble as I crawl through the hole, soaking wet and over it, the damp fabric clinging cold and heavy against my skin.

"You okay?" Pope asks as I squeeze through.

"Yes. Fine," I groan.

"All right. This must be how they got out," Pope says, looking up at the ladder, its rungs slick and rotted with age.

"Damn...how did that ladder hold those people? It looks like it'll break any second." I said

"It'll do for now." Pope mumbles

"That's sketchy," I mutter.

"It's not the sketchiest thing I've climbed." He shrugged

"I mean...yeah, that's fair," I nod as he starts to climb up, the old wood groaning ominously under his weight with every step.

"You good?" I call as he gets higher.

"Yeah. I just can't see anything." He said

"You got it," I tried to encourage, though my own nerves were fraying with every passing second.

He reaches the top and tries to move the stone above us.

"Is it moving?" I shout.

"It won't budge. This thing's a thousand pounds."

"Help! Cleo! John B!" Pope yells, pounding on the stone, the sound dull and useless against all that weight.

"Help! John B! Cleo! Help!" I yell too, my voice cracking with the effort.

But nobody hears us. Nobody's coming.

"Okay, new plan. We go back the way we came and find another way out." He said

"But the door's locked," I remind him, panic creeping fast into my chest.

"I know I know. I can't move this. Okay— I'm coming back down." He said

I crawl back through the hole — and get soaked head to toe in freezing cold water, the shock of it stealing my breath entirely.

"Does that water level look higher to you?" Pope asks.

"Obviously!" I snap.

"How high do you think it goes?"

"I don't know, is there a waterline? It has to be raining outside, it's really filling up fast," I said, my mind already racing ahead to exactly how much time we might have.

We both look up at the walls trying to find a waterline.

"Barnacles," Pope mutters.

"And they go all the way up to the ceiling," I said, dread pooling cold and immediate in my stomach.
