Kie lets me in before she even finishes tying up her hair, and I spill everything- Topper kissing me, the fight with John b, falling asleep under a tree like some stray dog who doesn't have a home to go back to. She listens the way Kie always listens: arms crossed, eyebrows knitted, ready to fight anyone who hurt me.
As I finish, my phone buzzed.
"Who is it?" Kie asked
"Wheezie" I said
We both go still.
I open the message. It's a voice recording.
I press play.
"Stella. Don't be mad but I ran away. I'm in the OBX and I have to see you. Come to our rental condo on greensburrow street ok? But Stella please don't tell anyone."
The recording ends. And something in my chest cracks clean down the middle.
"Oh my God..." I whisper, a single tear slipping out before I can stop it.
Kie puts her hand in my arm. "Go. I'll be here when you get back" she said
I wrap my arm around her, relieved, grateful. "Thank you kie" I smiled
"Always" she said
"Hello?" I call, stepping into the condo, heart pounding. "Wheezie? Wheeze?" I ask
I turn the corner-
And stop cold.
He's standing there. My dad.
"I effing knew it. I knew it." I say, shaking.
"I needed to see you Stella. I just needed to tell you I'm sorry because I am so-" he steps toward me.
"No. You stay right there!" My voice cracks, but I don't step back. "Do you know how stupid this is? If anybody sees you- you go to jail! If I yell and the cops come- you go to jail!" I said
"I don't think you're gonna do that." He said, confidently.
"Try me. I already did." I said
He freezes. "What?" He asked
"Don't worry. I called them to the unit next door." I shrug like it's nothing, even though my hands won't stop shaking. "I could yell. I might. So whatever it is you're here for I suggest that you hurry up and you don't piss me off." I said
"So angry. So much hatred" he mutters
"Because I'm homeless!" I raise my voice, trying to keep it from breaking. "I have no money! I have no family except Sarah! I have nowhere to go because of you!" I said
"I know" he says softly.
"And you used my baby sister as bait to get me here." I said. I'm crying now. Full-on cry.
