That next morning, I filled Kie in on everything.
John B saying yes. What that yes actually meant.
Our quiet agreement we'd made in the middle of the chaos, the two of us clinging to something hopeful even while everything else was falling apart around us.
I also finally told John B the truth about JJ.
Somehow, between revelations and fear and hope, John B and I had an idea. A big one.
And Kie was helping me get ready for it, her hands careful and quick in my hair, both of us pretending not to notice how our voices kept catching on something too big to say out loud.
I stepped out of the house in a simple white dress, part of my hair pinned back.
Nothing fancy. Just...intentional.
John B looked up, and his face softened immediately, something warm and disbelieving passing across it like he still couldn't quite trust his own good luck.
"Let's make this quick. All right? Gotta keep my head down," JJ said.
John B started toward me, instinctively reaching for my hand. "Hey, we're gonna get out of your hair actually. Give you guys some space," John B said.
"Yeah," I nodded.
JJ frowned. "What?" he asked.
"Yeah. You know...it's your dad. And— and it's your mom's grave. You should do this with him," I said carefully.
He paused. Looked at me. "And yours too," he said quietly. "So why aren't you coming?"
The words hit harder than expected.
I swallowed, feeling the weight of everything I couldn't quite say pressing against my chest. "I can't. Not right now," I admitted.
He studied my face, like he was trying to decide if I was lying or just breaking, and I hated that I couldn't give him an easier answer.
"This... this should be between you and your dad. You deserve that moment. I'll come later. I promise. I just—" I stopped myself. "I can't see that right now," I admit.
Silence stretched.
Then— "So you're bailing?" he asked, not angry, just confused.
"No," I said immediately.
"Not bailing. We're just multitasking," John B said.
"We're running some errands. We'll be right back! We have something to do!" I said as John B pulled me with him, my heart aching a little at the confusion still written plain across JJ's face.
"An errand? Right now? Are you kidding me guys? We could save Poguelandia if we could just read—" JJ yelled after us.
John B slipped his arm around my shoulders, steering me away before JJ could finish.
