"I'd like to remind you, the winner of the auction...." the man says , but pope starts to talk to us.

"Listen up here's the plan. We go up in one dollar up increments all right? It's gonna take a while but we're gonna need to save every cent for construction." Pope says.

"Pope has a point. JJ, got it?" Kie says, knowing damn well he doesn't like it. He just nods.

"All right, don't change the plan" pope says. We turn our attention back to the man.

"It is foreclosure sale of 14 Roger's Point Road. Now, this is the old Maybank place. Now, the bank has an opening bid of $80,000" he says

"Here we go" pope mumbles.

"Looking for 81. I've got $80,000 going once-"

"$80,000 and one dollar" pope raises his hand

"Okay, one dollar more, at $80,000, one dollar-"

"$80,500" a man calls

"$80,500 right here at $80,500" the auctioneer repeats.

"It's okay. Popes got it" kie tells JJ.

Pope goes to raise his hand again- but JJ beats him to it.

"$100K flat out right here." JJ announces loudly.

My eyes snap wide open.

"Hey what are you doing?" Pope asks

"Just a knock out punch. Knockout punch and we're a wrap." JJ says

"That's not the plan. That's not the plan." Pope reminds him.

"I got the shot done" JJ says

The auctioneer continues, and JJ looks proud, ready to claim victory- until the other guy counters with $150K. The man strolls over, trying to tell JJ to quit.

But again- it's JJ.

He doesn't back down. Not once. Not ever.

And at that moment, we all knew-
We should've left JJ at home.

The numbers keep climbing, too fast, too expensive, too stressful. My chest tightens. Each shout from the bidders feels like it's hits directly behind my ribs.
It's stupid- no one's in danger- but my brain keeps flashing to the echo of explosions, shouting, running.
It's just an auction. You're fine. You're fine.

"This is way over our price range" pope mutters.

"Can someone make him stop, please?" I ask, half-pleading, half-exhausted.

"Get him out of there" pope tells John b.

But of course, it doesn't work.

JJ yells another bid.

Finally, the other man sighs.
"That's too rich for my blood Rog." He says
