Tonight was bonfire night. Same place, same time, every year. Tradition carved into this place.
I don't know why I said yes to going with Topper. Maybe because john b was showing up with Yvonne.
Maybe because I needed a distraction.
Or maybe because I didn't know what else to do with the ache inside me.

"Stella, you know what you need?" Topper ask, already half buzzed on excitement.
"You need a drink. All right let's get you a drink. Oh! They got mai tais. Come on." He says

"I don't know" I mumble

"Come on. Let's just have a good night. Come on." Topper pressed a can into my hand.

"Yeah." I force a smile.

"Something to kind of take the edge off. Cheers." He adds

"Cheers" I echo

"Cheers to just a... just a normal fun night"
He says

"Yeah." I laugh softly.

But the moment I lift the drink, I see him-
John b- taking to Yvonne.
The whole world shrinks to the shape of his silhouette in firelight. He turns, eyes meeting mine.
I look away like it didn't matter.
But of course it mattered.

A little later, topper wanders into a territory he always finds himself in: John b.

"Stella I got nothing against him all right? I really don't. I just... I didn't feel like you belonged with him right? And I... I knew you thought you were close." He says

"We were close" I said.

"You're... you're... you're too damn trusting.
You're just gonna get hurt. I just... I don't think they feel things in the same way that we do. You know what I think? I think we should have a good time tonight. And I wanna dance." He said

I give him another small fake smile.

"Let's dance." He laughs, taking my hand and spinning me.

"What are you doing?" I ask, dizzy from more than the spinning.

"It just... just feels like old times you know? It's just... it's just you and me. We're just... Listen Stella I don't wanna freak you out after everything you've been through-" he started

"What could possibly freak me out any more than what I've already been through?" I ask honestly

He hesitates.
"I just don't want you to forget we had something too" he said
