"So this is what we're doing, huh?" JJ's voice snaps through the wind, sharp and restless. He's pacing more than standing, jaw tight.
"We're just sailing out. We're just gonna forget about John B? We should never have left him. We're turning right back around."
My stomach twists. His guilt is loud enough for all of us, echoing something I've been fighting to keep quiet in my own chest.
"No! We're all gonna get caught. What type of plan is that?" Cleo fires back.
"It's a plan to stick together Cleo," JJ says, stubborn as ever.
"Then we are dead together."
"She's right, JJ. We had to leave or we'd all be zip-tied in the back of a pickup. As hard as it was we did the right thing," I said, though the words feel thin even as I say them, the guilt still sitting heavy under my ribs.
And then— Ring ring.
We all freeze.
"It's the phone Stel stole," Sarah says, eyes widening.
"That's John B." JJ doesn't hesitate. He grabs it like it's a lifeline, and something in the desperation of that grab breaks my heart a little.
"That's definitely John B. Hold on."
He answers. "Yo! Dude! Is this you?"
"Speaker. Speaker," Kie says.
"What... Do you need us to turn around?" JJ asks, but the signal crackles so bad it makes my skin crawl, hope and dread tangled together at the sound of it.
"Yo say it again. Say it again," JJ urges, leaning closer.
"We do not copy. Can you—" JJ starts.
"Give me that," I mutter, snatching the phone. My heart is pounding so hard it hurts.
"John B? Are you okay?"
"Yes. I'm fine. Everything's good. Listen—" His voice cuts, fades, comes back warped, distant and half-swallowed by static.
"He's fine." I breathe out. Relief floods through me so fast it nearly knocks me over. "Thank God. What happened?"
Static. His words drowned out.
"Wait. What'd you say? John B? I... I can't hear you. John B?"
Then the important part breaks through like a ghost — "I'll meet you on Kildare okay?"
"Kildare when? John B! No no no. John B!" The line dies before I can get anything else, and I'm left staring at the dead phone in my hand, my heart still racing with everything unresolved.
"Kildare. What the hell?" I whisper.
"You guys think he found his father?" Cleo asks.
"He's been missing for almost a year," Pope mumbles.
