We all settle back into the boat, the ocean sliding quietly under us as if it's exhaling with relief too. When we finally pull into John B's dock, my chest tightens — I didn't expect a piece of wood and a crooked house to feel like salvation, but there it is, warm and familiar in a way that catches me off guard.
"There she is." John B's voice goes soft with a kind of awe I've never heard him aim at anything but this house.
"Bet it is good to see her old bones right," JJ grins.
"Welcome home guys," Kie says, smiling, though something tired lives underneath it.
"You know I gotta be honest. Not exactly looking forward to a check-in at home. My parents probably already arranged my funeral." Half joking, half not, and I feel the truth of it land somewhere sympathetic in my chest.
"I predict unpleasantries at the Heyward household after I left the truck in Charleston," Pope mutters.
"No one knows we're here right?" JJ asks. "And you two aren't gonna get into any more trouble for showing up 12 hours later. Am I right or am I right?"
"You're not wrong."
"So that means we have 12 hours to do whatever we want. Huh? A little Pogue fellowship. How does that sound?" JJ spreads his arms wide like he's opening the gates to paradise.
"Let the shit hit the fan tomorrow. Come on." John B cheers.
"Yeah!" JJ hollers.
Sarah shakes her head. "The cops could be looking for him. It could be really stupid."
"Sarah Cameron you've heard of my philosophy right?"
"No."
"Stupid things have good outcomes all the time."
We all mouth it with him. It's basically scripture at this point, and something in me softens at the familiarity of it, the ritual of a joke that's outlasted everything we've been through.
"Who's with me?"
"Hell yeah I'm in." I laugh, slinging an arm around JJ's shoulder. The air is warm, buzzing with the smell of beer and summer grass, and for a second — just a second — I let myself believe we're safe.

And the chaos begins exactly how it always does.
Pope stands up and suddenly starts rapping like he's on stage instead of on the ground.
"I never made good grades in school. When I get out I act like a fool. They say I come in the party and cause a commotion. I'm smooth. Yeah call me lotion."
"Do it Pope!" JJ shouts.
"Wooo! Get it Pope!" I yell, the laugh already bubbling up before he's even finished.
